View Full Version : Clunking noise in straight line
Just developed a "clunking" noise on the SVX. When I start in first gear (gear selector in D) driving in a straight line I hear a clunking sound coming from the left front of the car and when I roll down the window I hear a metallic knock from the left front as well. It feels like something stuck to the tire through the steering wheel but it all smooths out and the sound goes away after I reach 40 MPH or above and doesn't return even when I slow down below 40 MPH unless I take off from a dead stop. The drivers side front outer CV boot is split in half which is a good indicator of the problem but I have never owned a car with CV joints before and I'm hearing check tie rods and ball joints from local armchair mechanics. They tell me CV's don't make noises like that unless your turning left or right. Any input would be appreciated...

It never hurts to check the other items while you're down there, but the locals aren't quite correct stating the cv joints are only being noisy when turned. They can be noisy in any direction, it's just more prevalent when turning.

It is good that you are replacing the axle usually the inner joint will cause the noise taking off:eek:

Thanks for the info Chris:) Funny thing is, my outer boot is torn but the inner boot is intact. But I just got the rebuilt axle in and will be giving it the r&r a.s.a.p.
