View Full Version : Blank dash button

On the right side of the steering wheel we are all familiar with the BLANK/DEFOG/HAZARD switch on our USDMs. Does anyone know what that blank switch does on non US models?

Like myself, you own a L model. The button is, I think, for the alarm on the LSi models. Somebody who spent more on their car than me can chime in. :)

To your other right of the steering wheel. The security button is in the CRUISE/FOGLAMP/SECURITY switch panel.

um pardon my ignorance but isnt that the left side of the steering wheel then?

Ok, poorly responded on my part.

I know what the blank button left of the steering wheel is. It is the security button on alarm equipped vehicles.

I don't know what the blank button right of the steering wheel is. There are no listings of it's purpose for USDMs. It's not ANTennta, POWER or ECONomy, as those are in the center console on the Euro-spec models. Any one have any ideas?

Edit: On RHD vehicles, their location with respect to the steering wheel may be different, in both cases it is the blank button that is with DeFog and Hazard.

Press it. It doesn't move. It's just decoration.
Mine doesn't move. If yours does I don't know why.

If you pop out the dummy button cover, there is a button behind it. I don't know if it is wired to anything, but it would work great as an accessoriy button, maybe wire it to the TPS through a relay for power mode (can't remember who did that mod).

Edited for clarity.

Hmm i wonder what it could be...im not sure if anyone has ever brought this up before.

I did an exhaustive search of the board and haven't found anything (yet). I have been searching though the lockers of the peeps who post in the Euro section for pictures of the dash board. The layout of the dash found at subaruparts.com only shows dummy(dommy) knobs for that position, but they only list parts for USA/Canada (eh?) cars. For USDM cars, the wiring harness includes ALL options, even if the car came without. I was hoping that the switch would go to some unused connector out in lala land that could be tapped into and used. You would need to get a button cover to put on it, i.e. another cruise control or something.

Anyway, my fingers are crossed. That would make for a very clean installation.

I bet you it's just some universal thing there for anyone to play with should the need arise. :)

I could tell you what it is, except that someone in the thread called us Euro users "peeps"

When I check out in the dictionary what "peep" is, I might respond.

On early JDM models, it was blank. On later models, it was the door lock cancellation button, which had previously been on the transmission console.

Peeple.

OK, I am no longer offended.:)

Like paddles sez, on my JDM model, it is blank, just like yours. The sequence is hazard, defog, blank. The JDM ones do not have the same security system as the US, so I am presuming that caused a blank switch position also.

Mine has no door unlock button on the console, nor beside the wheel. It would be a seriously useful thing to have, and you have just given me the idea to fit it. Thanks for the idea.

On the English spec car, to the left of the wheel is Hazard, defog and headlight wash. This last one is the one you are wondering about.

On the rhs of the wheel in that car is blank, cruise and rear foglights.
[Incidentally, on the JDM car which has no cruise, these switches are blank, blank and front foglights.]

The English car does not have a switch for front fogs, because the glass headlights in the UK and in Germany, probably in all of Europe, have no lights in the third inner position, only a silvered blank plate to make it look like there was something behind the lens. This is something I hope to change in my glass lights. It's difficult to understand why these were left out of the glass lights. If asked to guess, I imagine there may be rules in some of the markets [German TuV maybe?] that do not allow fogs beside headlamps, or three in a row or something. Otherwise, it just seems a silly oversight.

Alright, next time you find a set in a boneyard, let me know. I'll make it worth your while :)

This file that shows how to remove your dash was done in a non-us model svx and shows the button that is to the left of the hazards and defog.

Maybe that car is Canadian? It's definitely LHD.

On either side, the switch we are discussing is showing as front fog and rear fog. I seem to remember the Canada model had the front fogs down as daytime running lights.

I have disasembled the swichs and it is not easy to add a swich to the blank.

There are no wires in there.
If you remove the blank cover the swich does push in, but it does not stay in.
I have found a way to get a small swich in side there, but I don't think it can take a load without melting and would be eazy to brake.

I'll have to get some pics tomaro night.

I think they are only good if you put them in the microwave for about 10 seconds.......just before they are about to explode and they puff up........The marshmellow cream and sugar are delicious when they are warm!!.....And if you get really creative, put a stick in one end of it and enjoy!....LOL

Apologies. I misjudged it.

The car is Euro spec, has the kilometres clock.

In my defense, the picture is so out of focus, it's hard to see the logo on that button.

Looking closely at the two pictures, the button to the left of the rear screen defog is the "squirter", the power wash button for the headlights. The headlight part is easy to discern, but you can see where the water jet is depicted squirting up at the lights.

German car would be my guess.

Ahhh, can you tell me if the switches are modular? Could the mechanism from 'cruise' or 'foglights' be installed into the blank slot? Or is the switch body a one piece "take it apart and never get it back together again" type deal?

I think the idea of installing an after market (radio shack) switch it OK, but I'd rather retro-fit a stock switch from a junker module into the existing socket.

Does anyone have the under-hood wiring harness diagram? I have the dash schematic (thanks beav), I want to see where every thing goes under the hood. Having the L-AWD model and discovering that the security system harness is already there is the greatest thing ever. Now I'm on a mission to find out what other wiring is there but unused.

Sunroof, heated mirrors, electric seats? What else?

BTW: What is the best service manual for the SVX? Chilton (haha) / AllData / Factory?

If you are serious about working on your car and keeping it for a long time, invest in the factory manuals. Cost is about $160 more or less for the set.

No, you can take it apart and then put it back together, but its not modular.

The electric seat and mirror heater harnesses will be there, but no US SVX has any of the seat heater harness :(

Hey does the outer black cover come off of the switch?
I have to replace the bottom light bulb.
I can't get a couple of bulbs out....and I heard there are some screws to take out to get the switch cover off.

Matt

The blue and brown circles you see in the picture, they are the bulbs, and they are exposed like that so you can change them. I have, I think, replaced all my bulbs in this way, and I can't remember there being one that was not accessible.

You put a blade scredriver in the slot, turn them anticlock a half turn or so, then withdraw them. They can be a tight fit and unwilling to fall out or withdraw. In this case, use your ingenuity. I would expect a fine needle-nosed pliers would be able to get a grip on the head and pull them out for you.

I see....I was having trouble taking the more recessed bulbs out....the ones to let you know if the button is pushed in....I think it's the Illumi-on bulbs.

My plan had always been, that if I were to add after-market driving lights, that I would take the fog light switch from the left side(of a spare module) remove it, and install it in the blank position for a stock looking drivving light switch.

I have all of the needed parts for this, being two spare switch panels, I just have never gotten around to making it a reality.
