Is the SVX engine an interference engine or non-interference engine?

I was wondering if the SVX engine is an interference engine? In other words if the timing belt were to break would it damage the engine?

The SVX has a noninterferance engine.

EG33 is pretty much a pre-1997 EJ22 with two more pistons. This makes it a non-interference engine. (Like was said above).

I was hoping the SVX engine is a non interferrence engine. I had already torn into replacing the timing belt and was waiting for my parts to arrive from UPS but they were delayed two days. Got the new timing belt in and checked the old one. It was time to replace it, because it was started to separate in one area. I am not sure hwo many miles were on that belt as I just got the car a month ago.

When you replace it, you will know when it was changed. That is a good way to know what has been done to it. Good luck. :)

I seem to remember Subaru telling a member of this site that the SVX did not have a non-interference engine. If the timing belt breaks, it's highly unlikely that the valves will contact the pistons, but technically the valves could hit eachother.

Granted, it would have to take something pretty catastrophic for that to happen, and if it did you probably wouldn't be worried about the valves crashing into eachother. :)

Technically, as the camshafts are gear driven, in effect mechanically locked together, a broken timing belt in itself could not cause contact between the valves. Could Subaru have been covering themselves against possible sticking or bent valves, even if this is highly unlikely? Or is this simply an ongoing, unfounded, rumor? :confused:

If you want to play it safely (even though we are 100% sure it is a non interfierent engine), when installing the timing belt, turn the crank pulley a full engine turn with the related tool and check if it interfieres. You will also be able to check if all marks are correct.

Yes, that seems to have been the case. As you said, it's highly unlikely. Something catastrophic would really have to happen.
