Source is irrelevant, listen to what is coming out of these people's mouths.

Thank you for completing my thought.

My fault for expecting Niki here to pick up on that...

Re: Heartland, or Not-Very-Smart Land?

This poll is ridiculous. Do you REALLY THINK that most people in the midwest think and talk that way? Or are you just trying to incite a mean spirited thread?

You and Michelle Obama.

+1 for Tom's post

Oh and Obama is a Senator from Illinois (the Heartland) lest you forget.

Why would I get out when that would dramatically increase the risk of death by American bombings/invasion?

I am at little risk from injury of any kind staying where I am, especially since there is so much fodder walking around absorbing all the tragedy.

Me living here is not the problem, it's opportunist bigots like you who should leave.

--
I also think that no matter where you go, you will be surrounded by incompetence and cruelty. Well, that is a given for you, but I mean for anyone in general since it is so widespread.

--
Oh, and I did say "sometimes", meaning less than a majority of the time, because I rarely come into contact with people like this, and usually only online.

I don't get it. Is the video trying to say that Obama is not a terrorist?

I don't know, nothing in the first post is my original idea (cept for shart gland, that is mine), which just makes the thread even more hilarious when I tell you guys this.

Actually you probably got the word shart from "Along Came Polly" so I wouldn't claim that as an "original idea" either. come to think of it... If there is no point to your initial post, why did you post it??

I never gave anyone any indication of what I believe until my third post. I merely posted a video and awaited responses.
Not true. You said:
Quote:
Heartland, or Not-Very-Smart Land?
Thread title and poll categories.

And of course you voted not very smart land.

Then you said
Quote:
Sometimes I am ashamed to live in this country.
It sure looked to me like you were trying to make a generalization that people living in the Heartland are racists, or at least not very smart.

Am I wrong? It looked pretty plain to me?

Quote:
we all are guilty by association of just living in the same country as them.
Guilty by association huh? well then those accusing Obama of being a terrorist in the video could not be more right? (just using your logic)

Quote:
Do you feel confident knowing that millions of misguided and just plain ridiculous people are helping decide the course of your future?
I don't like it any more than you when I know that it is very likely that the 18 year old kid with the Obama t shirt has no clue what change obama will bring, other than he is not George Bush, or that he is cool, or he can shoot a basketball, or his friends say he is cool. I also don't like it when I see the old man calling Obama the n word and that is why he is voting for McCain. That is just plain terrible.

BUT that is democracy. We are fortunate though that the founding fathers were smart enough to give us the three branches, and two houses in the legislature. Later on we got term limits etc. Checks and balances are there. States, counties, and municipalities also have their own jurisdictions.... the power is spread around. And this is sure a lot better than a Monarchy, dictatorship, Military rule, you name it.

Never saw that movie.
The point of posting the thread, as with all of my threads, is in the hopes interesting discussion will arise. I will admit it is quite a gamble every time. So I don't actually have any strong opinions about the video, so what. Why should that matter. It doesn't.

The reason I keep coming back to this forum is because it is the only one with a constant of people who disagree with me (SVXN is the odd dog out, by far). I can go to any number of forums, post my opinions, and circle jerk all day with people who will agree with me. Why would I want to do that? That's boring.
I believe the point of discussion forums is to exercise the mind. This is what I attempt to do, and considering some responses, partially succeed in doing.

I somewhat agree. I thought I was quoting someone else who said that but I can't find it at the moment. I'm not ashamed to live here so much as ashamed to be associated with other people who live here.

Again, those are not my words. I don't even know what the hell the "heartland" is nor do I care.

Quote:

Yes, I did, after I saw someone who had voted for the first option. I would not have touched the poll otherwise. It does not mean I believe it is a not-so-smart land, which I must again stress is not something I even initially thought up, or would EVER think of on my own despite finding it hilarious.

Quote:

The person who made that connection was you. I made no statement about what I could be ashamed of or what I thought about those people until later.

Quote:

This makes no sense. I do not understand why you think they are right unless you were already thinking that. I was merely stating that foreigners often see all Americans as that which is often displayed, in this case the ones with whom we would probably not want to associate. Does the fact we do not associate these people change the opinion of the foreign people? No.
We are guilty merely by association through boundaries and culture and as a country share the burden these few people so nonchalantly heave upon the world.

Sure, we are fortunate for that and I do agree with you. I was being facetious about the totalitarian rule. I am strongly opposed to such a thing, however democracy does have it's severe flaws which is why this system is actually designed as a republic (or a representative democracy if you want to go a little further), not a true democracy.
If you can find solace in having your future tailored by people representing a drooling mass, more metaphorical power to you.
I would rather educate that mass than attempt to alter or "just go with" the current power structure.

It may seem cruel, but I feel the only way to educate a mass is to help it realize how stupid it truly is. Humility is born in this way (or contempt, depending on how it goes. fun either way)

Help me understand, did you not name the poll and the post?

I'll eduacate you (since you are into education): From Wikipedia "The term Heartland is also frequently used to describe the Midwestern region of the United States."

Quote:

I didn't say they were right, I was using your logic of guilty by association to justify what they were saying (not the racist stuff to be clear). Obama has been associated with a domestic terrorist right?

You didn't specify that guilty by association only applies to the citizenship, or region.

I don't think Obama is a terrorist. (maybe a socialist though)

We agree Yes on representative democracy... it also filters out a bunch of the "ignorance" to put it mildely.
