antenna with horrible reception

Recently replaced the antenna and reception is horrible compared to the old one.
I turned on radio and unplugged it at the rear and it did get much worse so I assume it is plugged in to the radio.
I plugged it backed in and it is still horrible.
My previous antenna got great reception but the mast got bent by someone going over my car as I ran over him.
What can I do to get better reception?
