Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

This weekend, I cleaned the Claret SVX and inside the wheel arches. Impressed with the condition of this car, underneath the grime. I pulled out both SVXs to wash the garage floor. More SVX projects soon. I have to reinstall the radio and the console in my 1991.

After replacing ATF, I think you should spin the tires at each shift position to bleed the air in the AT. If your car is AWD, put in the DIFF LOCK fuse in the fuse box. Otherwise, the ABS warning light will come on and a FAULT will be recorded. Also, this task is very dangerous with a quick jack. It is better to release the brake occasionally and slowly rotate the tire, or use a standard car lift. |

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Today, I repaired the ABS of an H6 3.0L Legacy that I had not been able to repair for a long time. Currently, the BOSCH ABS units for Subaru up to about 2010 models have been discontinued, and new genuine parts cannot be purchased. There are many used parts for the 2.0L Legacy, but very few for the 3.0L.
Subaru dealers will not accept repairs to ABS units. If any warning light, including the check engine indicator, ABS or airbag, comes on, the car will not pass the vehicle inspection in Japan since several years ago. Currently, many Subaru cars up to about the 2010 model year are scrapped due to the problem with the ABS warning light. I couldn't find a used ABS unit for my Legacy with a 3.0L FLAT6 engine in Japan, and the only ones I could find were very expensive ones in the UK and Germany. Recently, I found a relatively cheap used one in Poland, so I bought it. Up until now, the engine would not even start with the ABS unit plugged in, so the connector was disconnected long time. This Legacy wagon was in need of some maintenance. The ABS problem arose after replacing a corroded weld under the radiator, and all of the ATF lines which were rusting and about to develop a hole. I think I probably damaged the ABS controller when I was welding it in. I didn't use the hydro part of the ABS, I just replaced the controller. Now all the warning lights are off and it's back to normal. It's been about a year since I last saw it. It's been a long time. All that's left is to replace the timing chain, tensioner and water pump, so it will be a while before I can drive the car again. |

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Over the past few days, I worked on both of the SVXs some.
The JDM SVX got a wheelskin steering wheel cover. This took a couple hours to sew on, but is worth it versus the peeling dye/leather. I will eventually get the wheel re-wrapped, but this was a nice lower-cost solution in the meantime. I brought the alternator to the 1992 to a local auto electric shop to be tested and rebuilt if necessary. The US SVX is displaying some signs of an undercharging alternator (intermittent array of warning lights). Hopefully, I will have the alternator back later on today.

I found the same part for sale at NISSAN and have purchased some before. If you need any more information, please let me know. You might still be able to get it on eBay. |

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
I traded my younger brother's VIVIO for an R1R (not the supercharged one).
I gave the R1R a fully maintenance over the course of a month. After replacing the valve stem seal, the white smoke problem disappeared, although it was only a small amount. I replaced a many worn out rubber parts. He'll be able to ride the R1 for a while without having to worry about breakdowns. Instead, I picked up the VIVIO and transferred the car's title to me. The engine of this car emits a lot of white smoke from the muffler. The engine is loud and sounds like it is going to break at 3500 rpm or more. I think the engine probably needs to be rebuilt or swapped. This '98 model is so old that most engine parts are discontinued. I can't find a same model used engine. In Japan, cars with different engine models cannot pass the vehicle inspection, but fortunately the engine model used in the R1 is the same. I might be able to build a replacement engine using some part or almost all of the same engine from a newer car, but that would be much more difficult than simply overhauling the engine. I already have a lot of SUBARUs, so this project is a very low priority. |

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Polished the hood and applied a coat of wax to the 91 JDM car as a celebration of assembling the rest of the interior. I drove the car Saturday night to dinner with a friend and it feels good to have it back together.
The faint smell of coolant greeted us at a stop. The Koyo rad now appears to be leaking, so a PWR radiator is on the way. I'm aiming to replace that and take the car to Radwood in August. I buffed the Claret SVX roof, which restored its clarity. There are still imperfections in the paint, but the car overall is looking great.

Looks great. What have you used on the waterfall grill and lights?

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Hey Peter! I have not polished or buffed the lights on this car. I have applied P21 carnauba wax over the car this go around. The lights might need attention soon as they are just starting to haze a bit. I will be using the 3M kit on my 1992 soon.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Installed a PWR radiator on the 1991 JDM car today. Realized my heat in the car is not working. Maybe a left a stepper motor unplugged when I removed the dash . I'll figure that out. AC works though, and its hot!
Power steering pump is still giving me trouble, so I'm going to swap it with another used pump I have.

The cable is basically a cable using the FT232R IC chip, with the addition of an SSM connector. If you can solder and crimp connectors yourself, this should be relatively easy to make. The EVO Scan cable looks similar, but I don't know if that cable uses the FT232R chip or not. After all, I have yet to find a commercially available FT232R SSM-II cable. Also, the '91-'92 SVX has a problem with the SSM voltage level, which often results in unstable communications. Additionally, if you also want to access the cruise control ECU, additional modifications to the cable will be required. All of this information is on my website so please read it. And, I have one spare SSM cable for '91-'92 SVX, if you want it just send me a PM so I can send it to you. |

Subaru dealers in Japan scrapped all their SSM-IIs a few years ago. Most of them were too old and broken to be of any use, though... Currently, the only thing that can replace SSM-II, other than my software, are EvoScan VWRX or etc.... However, they only work with engine ECUs. |
