Re: "Cash for clunkers" program ADMINS request
Agreed... mostly.
I don't think the CFC program is a total waste. It does stimulate the economy, and it's purpose is to reduce emissions for older cars that don't get good gas mileage... I get that. Is it worth the $$? Not really. But.... keep in mind, last time I checked, the Ford Explorer was the #1 car being traded in. If I could get $4500 for my POS 1991 Ford Explorer (assuming I was stupid enough to actually own one), toward the purchase of a new Mini Cooper??? Hell..... I'd be all over that. I think cars with inherant value, rarity, or even the potential for collectibility if restored, shouldn't fall into this program... but those qualities are completely subjective and opinionated, and unfortunately..... directly apply to the SVX. To each his/her own... if your SVX is destroyed.... it just makes mine more rare, and valuable.... and I'm keeping mine. But 100% agreed with the OP...... we don't want to hear about it.

I agree with the consensus here, but I also agree with my friend's decision to trade in his old Cherokee for a spanking new Genesis coupe (I4 turbo). That thing hauls.

Re: "Cash for clunkers" program ADMINS request
Can I make a request TO the Admin?? Motion to ban anyone who turns their car in for CARS. If they do they have exhibited a lack of enthusiasm and dedication for their SVX. This is a community of people who keep on keeping on.... Just a thought

I can agree with that. Although my opinion doesn't count anywhere near as much as Tom's

Re: "Cash for clunkers" program ADMINS request
It's not just us hating this program. It looks like some idiot traded in a pristine 1985 Maserati Biturbo with 18k miles on it on a new Impreza. I've always liked those, even with their flaws and the bad press they got. I even looked into getting one to fix up in my spare time a while ago. And they made fewer of those for the US than the SVX even.
I bet the guys on the Biturbo forums are crying. Are there Biturbo forums? +1 for banning anyone who turns their SVX into CARS.

Re: "Cash for clunkers" program ADMINS request
I used to have one of those!! Had to sell it before we moved up here from California though
I think if my SVX had 250,000 miles on it and was falling apart, then MAYBE I would trade it in under the CARS program, but I'd strip it of any and all useful parts, even go so far as to find a junk engine or transmission to put in it, if those parts were still good. But as it is right now, even though I know I could not sell it for even $3500, let alone $4500, I wouldn't trade it in. I see NO sense in trading in an otherwise perfectly good car to be crushed. We have an 80s Dodge pickup that got traded in at my work, has a gazillion miles on it, and the roof is completely rusted through! True clunker! Shame it has to have the drivetrain demolished though, they should just like, state the car has to be cut in half or something... Related to the Maserati, apperently someone traded in a Legacy Turbo wagon with like 37,000 miles on it in Southern Oregon. (If that happened at my dealership, I'd swap the engine out with my 2.2 I have that was overheated so bad it melted the timing belt covers off!)

Well, I suppose from a purely financial standpoint (based on resale value), he got what he wanted out of the deal. Just as someone would if they were to clunk out an SVX in average condition. Keep in mind, though, that this is a 24 year old, handmade Italian car, of which relatively few were exported to the US, and VERY few remain today. And of the remaining cars in the US - how many are in excellent shape, with no visible rust, 100% complete, with only 18k original miles on them? Now here is one fitting that exact description, about to be crushed due to a BS government program. Put there in the first place by some probably extremely minor issue (sticking relay? intermittent ground?) that was keeping the motor from running at 100%. I would liken this to crushing an 18k mile SVX due to an owner not being able to diagnose a failing MAF and not wanting to spend the time / money to properly diagnose and fix it. Just strikes me as a real shame. Honestly - if I had known about this car - I would have bought it from him. And I'm 100% serious. I don't need another project right now, but I would have made room for it. EDIT: Video link of said car

Re: "Cash for clunkers" program ADMINS request
Well an SVX with around 20,000 miles is actually worth well over the $4500 max trade in. One sold on here a little while ago for well over $10,000, the seller never disclosed the actual price so its not quite the same thing as the Maserati
