Damn, Manarius got to it before I could. In 1st it acts the same way because putting the shifter in 1st tells the transmission to start there anyway. 2nd and 3rd it'll stay there (until redline, as mentioned), and D overrides the manual function.
I drive around with the manual switch on... habit from my Legacy days. It's for just in case. |

Would have been nice if the Manual button actually did what you;d think it would do... Made it act like a manual valve body, within reason of course, but more or less if you put it in 3 you're in third gear...
I saw a Volvo over at turbobricks.com (I work with a guy who likes Volvos) that a kid about my age or so (25) designed and built a paddle shifter setup for his Volvo... Was pretty sick looking! I wonder how hard it'd be to make one for a Subie...

Search button: Nah, never use that thing...It never gets you what you need. He'd end up with 100 pages of silly questions on 5 speed swaps
Paddleshift: the b4 blitzen came with padleshifters. Darren on the board here is in the process of inporting a wrecked one to retrofit the system to the svx. As I understand it, it requires ALOT of wiring changes..the tranny to change, and some steering wheel related junk as well

The manual button allows (on SVXi exquipped with an exhaust leak) you to convince passerby that you drive a manual transmission sports car

I am also curious about the button directly in front of the "park" indicator. I think it says" transmission. I also don't know what it does.

the shift lock? Ah, a very usefull little button indeed. If your car's battery dies, and you need to get it into neutral to move it, push the button in and select a gear. Basicly it overrides the "cant move the gear stick without the key in the ignition" thing

I just found out how bloody annoying that is on a 94+. The 91-93s had it so easy, it being a button and all...

94+ you pop the plug out, unscrew the screw (it's very long) slide the metal cover thing out of the way, and stick a screwdriver down the hole.

what does it mean is bad if you have to depress the button to move the gearshift everytime you start the car?

As I recall, if you can't move the shift selector when the car is started... then the actual solenoid that controls the lock/unlock mechanism is shot. But I could be wrong, I've not had mine go bad.

Besides, it is sometimes good to go back and revisit some of these questions - and remember, no question is "silly" on this network. Harry
