Very coincidental....

I got up Saturday with the intention of getting my emissions inspected. When I started the car I of course got a check engine light (first time in years) and it was the for knock sensor (passenger side). I ordered a pair of replacements from Rock Auto since I didn't particularly like the brands Advance was selling. Now on to finding instructions on how to change them. I have done it on the 94 Legacy many times before but those were easier to get to apparently.

Take off the alternator and using a ratcheting wrench (if you have one) carefully pull the bolt out. If no ratcheting wrench normal will do just takes longer/harder to do. The Passenger side is easier to get, its farther forward on the engine, the drivers side one is farther back, may have to get that by removing the throttle body and reaching in from the back.

Crushed the little ferrite thingy in my ECU today. Then seafoamed it through the larger hose on top of the intake. No hesitation and smoother idle now. Plus it seems to have solved my high idle problem.
Now I might actually drive it a little again before I sell it

Funny you mention not liking the brands at Advance. I should have just ordered mine from RockAuto as well, but Autozone had them in stock so I just went with it. The Duralast oil pressure sensor that I put in is faulty and it makes me a little nervous about the Duralast knock sensor I installed. I also replaced the Duralast coolant temp sensor that I installed a year ago that I think was bad from the start. I'm done with all Duralast parts at this point.

As for replacement, follow what 92 SVX said. Remove the alternator and you'll have access from the front side. I was able to get the driver's side sensor by doing that, which is farther back and harder to get to, but I have small, skinny hands so I tend to have less issues reaching things in tight spaces than most people.

I try to keep the times when I use off the shelf brands to a minimum and like most its about $$. OEM is just crazy expensive for knock sensors but the lifetime warrenty for most of these aftermarket ones make it a little more reassuring if need be. I actually had replaced two Bosch knocks on my Legacy that never seemed to work well with an Advance brand (forgot) which has kept the CEL out for sometime now.

In my experience and that of some other Members, Subaru is the only place to go for oil pressure sensors, two wire water temperature sensors and GASKETS AND SEALS!
Sorry for the rant.
We also have to go to Subaru for ball joints.
I have never had a problem with an aftermarket water pump, although YT does not use them due to his bad experiance with them, Mike, aka Longassname also does not use them.
I go with Subaru thermostats and hoses.
I USED to only go with Subaru radiator caps but the quality of the caps seems to have declined.
For axles you have to measure the hub to make sure that it was made correctly or you end up with an inner axle seal misfit. (Outer SVX Axle hub diameter 59 MM is correct).
But Miller brothers, Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone seem to be fine, as long as you measure them.

So I changed both the knock sensors after getting a code for just the bad passenger side. It was my first time and it took about 2.5hrs. I removed the alternator and it made it much easier but I still had to ask my wife to get to the drivers side after I loosened the bolt

Oh. Yeah, I thought I would show you what BOTH of the old knock senors looked like. (Can anyone tell if those are the original ones by any chance)



I have never seen or heard of that happening before. Any ideas????

Finally got the front brakes done. Seems like they have not been working for some time. We did rears 4 months ago ( suspected a frozen caliper, as the right rear got extremely hot) and then the fronts started chattering. Removed rotor and it was solid rust on the inside surface. See this image ::image.jpg. Wow they feel great now. Ceramic pads.
Wish I could post 2 photos.???? How?

Put a my 6th set of tires. Pirelli P7 Cinturato All Season Plus tires on the 2010 Outback. After much research and reviews, these seem to be a really great tire in all areas. Read reviews on Tire Rack, 1010 Tires, etc.

The Michelin Premier AS scored a bit higher in some areas, but are a lot more expensive.

Look how poor the ContiProContacts were. These were the new-generation Outback's OEM tire. Rated 22. Had 5 sets of them on for the past 250,000 miles.

Detailed my trunk. Vac it out, cleaned all the area around the trunk area. Waxed areas that can't be seen with trunk closed. ( all areas around the trunk support,and underside of lid. ) took it for a ride with new brake pads.. No vibration in the steering wheel. ( have always felt a slight tingle in the wheel. Found the reason for sure. ) stops are very smooth.
