Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Over the holiday, Kuo came down from KC and helped me (okay, he did 99% of the work, while i handed him tools) install an alarm system with remote start and a new stereo head unit. Here are videos for those that would like to see them.

Only thing I did not like on my 92 SVX with remote start was the auto seat belt is up when you get in.

When you open the door it goes back so I don't really have an issue with it. Overall i like the remote start quite a bit

Loved it when I had it. Had one of the first in town. Back in 1994. Also had one of the 1st car phones in that 1992. People called it the Bat mobile. Scared a lot of people at the pumps.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Alternator went out when the wife was driving home yesterday. Luckily with a yellow top optima and her being smart to turn off the accessories she made it across town to get home. Bought a cheapo alternator at oreilly and it was bad out of the box. Bought another cheapo from pep boy (can't get good parts on Sunday). Working now but not happy about having a low class alternator. Will have to get original rebuilt.

Don't know much about this company, but they are offering 140A high-output rebuilds for the SVX. Price seems a little steep.

http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/item_293/Subaru-SVX.htm

I sent this to Maniac Electric Motors to see if they were familiar with them, but they weren't.

I don't think their load calculator is too accurate though. I tried it.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

We tired the "upgrade" option at Quality Power Here is the FB summary of our process. Upgrade is 170$.

"Looks like we are going to bite the bullet and ship a spare SVX alternator out to Quality Power for upgrade to 140+amps and general R&R. We will keep you informed how the process goes. Waiting for them to PayPal invoice us now. Hope to ship it out tomorrow or Wednesday.

UPSed it out Friday by slow boat to save a $ or two. Got all types of pre-work photos to hope to tell what gets removed and cleaned up. Scribed a mark on one ear to verify we get ours back. Payment is to be posted to them upon work completion.
December 14, 2014 at 2:12pm

12/19/14 Quality Power reports alternator R&R and upgrade to 140 amps complete. Very fast turnaround. Expect to have it back in hand by New Years day. I will check for tool marks and other evidence of work and post the info here.
December 19, 2014 at 1:45pm

Inquiry to Quality power reports that; on the bench; our alternator "maxed out at 152 amp and provided 110 amp at an 800 RPM idle."

Got it back today. No proof of upgrade except for receipt. Not sure how much is our old one, maybe the windings. Case appears new, not just dipped or cleaned. Marks we applied are not present. Same for pulley and nut but not the shaft. I expect this is more of a swap (with$$) than an actual R&R of the one we shipped out. Not a complaint, just an observation and a bit of info for anyone else who wants to do this. Product LOOKS super. Installation will happen in the late spring.

More info on the QP alternator upgrade: "it maxed out at 152 amp and provided 110 amp at an 800 RPM idle" during bench testing.

Downloaded an updated stage 2 map for the Legacy. I tell you, it is certainly nice to be able to just go online and download mods for my car!

Can't wait for warmer weather to get started on the SVX again though.

The problem I have seen with Subaru rebuilt alts in general, is they charge with TOO high volts, a rebuild generally doesn't include the internal voltage regulators, and that single part is what cause most to fail. I have never had a parts store one that the voltage regulator is working right, and they have always been junk out the box, usually overcharging VOLTS.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Not quite sure what I did. I put a shift kit in my '97 almost a year ago, I started having "solenoid A ," codes. I put some Lubegard in it and that shut it up until the weather turned cold. I said screw it and tossed in the recent rebuilt trans from my parts car in, and swapped the TCU with it. Same problem surfaced almost immediately. Disconnected the shift kit and the "Solenoid A" problem has not repeated. So, although it now looks like I changed transmissions for nothing, it now would seem that I have a perfectly good transmission to put in my '94. Now if I could just figure out what I did wrong with the shift kit...

Anyone want a perfectly good '94? lol..

Now if we could just figure out what that god awful whine when it's really cold is..

We will watch for that at installation. Thanx.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Installed this, not as pretty as a touch screen but gives me bluetooth for phone and music. Fits nicely and allows the door to close. I placed the mic up in the drivers side pillar trim,. I may change it to visor, not sure yet. Now I just need to figure out how to use it.

Sean, your visor needs more weight?
Nice clean install BTW.
I just installed a Modern single DIN Subaru radio in my Claret to replace the stock radio and CD that I removed YEARS AGO while racing Young Tom.
So thats what SIX years ago?!?!
