The SVX was built and sold in Japan from 1991.
For all other markets the car was on sale from 1992 to 1997, when it was deleted as a model by Subaru. By the sound of things, nearly everybody here would like to own a 20,000 mile '97 SVX. However, I have a question; From the point of view of originality and collectability, which of the following is better? A 1992 SVX with 20,000 miles A 1997 SVX with 20,000 miles [I already know which is harder to find] Joe

Which is more collectible
Quote:
I would say for the cause of collectability the first and last years of production hold the most value and are most desired by collectors. This is of coarse not considering things like limited production editions, rare colors, or rare performance options like the american muscle cars of teh 60's and 70's. In the case of the case of the SVX, since there wee really only two trim options (aside from AWD or not) it would come down to the 1st and last years and the anniversary edition in 93 (I think) would too demand more in the future. Now what would maybe set apart the 97's from 92's would be how many of each year was produced making one more rare than the other. An example of this are the 93 to 95 Mazda RX7's. There were only some 500 to 600 95's produced for the US and today the demand the most dollars having been the least produced year and the last combined into one. But in the end, and again, 1st and last plus the anniversary editions are the tops in my books. In the case of the SVX, its low numbers, and all years not really having any differences, all are pretty close and ultimately things like the condition inside and out, historical maint. records, how many owners, and miles will be more valuable than a 92 or 97 year. Regards Max |

I just missed getting a 92 with 16,000 miles on it.
As far as your question Joe, I would take the 93 with 20,000.

Max makes really good points relating to the run of the SVX. As a collector piece, first year, last year and special [Anniversary] editions would be most favoured. There is also the attraction of getting all factory improvements if you buy the run-out year. Most known recurring problems will have been totally fixed or had attention. However I would maintain that even with the large numbers sold in your part of the world getting a low miles early car is much more difficult than a low miles late car. People bought the SVX because it is such a good drive. That meant that first year cars ended up in the hands of people who use their cars a lot. By the time '97 came around the passion was gone from the market, and SVXes sat in dealers unregistered. I'm fairly sure quite a few of these would have been bought with an eye to future classic status and appreciation in value, and not used. This combined with the fact that early cars are a little over 15 years old, with the attendant extra miles, compared to '97 cars just a bit over 10 years old and it means there is probably 4 times the chance or more that you could find a low miles 97 compared to finding a similar low miles '92. I expect in your case Earl one of each would do the trick! Joe

Running????
Does it have to be running?? I suspect I might have the lowest mileage car--using just that criteria. Unfortunately, while it will run fine--it can't be used as it is structurally challenged as my signature says.

I find it odd
Quote:
Here's what I find odd. It seems that more than any other model or brand owners of the SVX own more multiple cars than any other. Why is that? Also, why are the price range so vast. Running cars at $900 to good examples at a fair average of $5000 to very great examples at a price of $12000. You usually can't by a crapy used american car for $900 yet alone a car like the SVX. I agree with all of you, and me the most of all . My points were considering once all years have become 15 years plus including the 97's making the whole production run and model be of "collection age." That said ideally 25 years plus makes a true collectable car but that would also mean that the 97's would have to be 25 plus years making the 92's have to wait the extra 5 years-this is perception of market buyers and not technical status as a 25 year old car is 25 years old point final. I think the 92,93AE, and 97's will all be great collectable cars in the future. At that point and due to the low volume any would be nice. Now to not avoid the question and to avoid it some more, a 92 with low miles has been on the roads by 5 years longer and thus should have more miles making a low mile car more hard to find. But at the same time the production of the 92's was much higher than 97 thus there may be the same amount of low miles 92's and 97's. I think they are equal in value today and the condition and miles both play the same role over the year. What I have seen is that 20K to 50K miles cars all sell for $10K to $13K and cars with 15K to 19K miles maybe more and finally cars with 10K or less are being put for sale anywhere starting at $15K all the way to $30K. Obviously, I don't expect the cars over $20K to sell but I would have been willing to pay up to $15K for a 97AWD LSi with 20K or less miles on it by original owner with records and perfect condition inside and out plus no accidents. I prefer the 97 over the same model/miles 92 because I have read that they had less transmission problems with the later cars when compared to the early cars. BUT I LOVE THEM ALL!!!!!! I think i just confused myself with all those numbers and years so if I did not make sense somewhere bare with me, at work and don't have time to proof read it to see if i made any sense at all. Many Reatta owners own more than one. And there were more Reattas made than SVXi!

Also how many FWD models were made? i'm guessing not that many which would make them rare.

They only produced the FWD in 94 and 95. I don't know what the % was of the totals for the years, but probably not that many.
