If you need any transmission work done, I would also recommend NRG Automotive at Rydalmere, in Sydney.
I had them do some work on my transmission about a year ago, when I began to notice a loud whirring sound coming from the transmission above 30 km/h. I thought that it was the front differential gears, but NRG correctly diagnosed it as a bad differential pinion shaft rear bearing, and replaced both the front and rear bearings on the shaft. Thankfully, since the pinion shaft can be accessed by simply separating the front differential and centre differentials from the transmission itself, the job was fairly quick and easy (once the transmission had been removed from the car!) Although NRG had never worked on an SVX before, they had worked on many Subaru 4EAT transmissions in other models, and I could tell that they knew what they were doing. Quote:

The spending begins....
Ah, hi guys.
Looks like I need a rebuild on the Transmission of my 92. While I am getting my gearbox fixed, I may as well address another issue I have.... A mysterious noise from under the car when turning at low speeds... Is this AXLE BINDING? It seems to make a clicking noise (almost a clunking noise but not that deep). Seems to happen more turning left. Any input fellas?

Or should I call you Ringo? What you are describing sounds like a CV joint on the front. When people talk about axle binding this usually refers to the back axles. The binding is caused by sticking clutches inside the gearbox. When it is happening the inner rear wheel locks while turning like from the brakes, particularly on a sandy or gravelly surface. It does not sound like a click or a knock. While your car is up on a ramp check the rubber CV boots. It sometimes happens that the boot gets torn. The lubricant gets away and the lack of lubricant causes the CV to wear and eventually break. I mention this because the torn or damaged boot will usually indicate which CV joint is gone. If you hear clicking on slow left turns, then probably your right CV is worn, as it is the one carrying the most pressure on a left turn. Likewise if clicking while turning right, you might suspect the left side axle CV. Hope this helps Joe

Check this thread: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=43744
Diagnosis from here: Yep, try the same place that Turbz went to in Sydney's south west (see page 2) if you happen to go that way. You've got a busted CV joint. Do them both while you are at it, save the hassle. Replacing them yourself will take a day or more the first time, if you have some mechanical experience. Once you're an expert like myself and my dad (having owned several L Series wagons and several Outback and Liberty models) it can take a couple of hours to jack it up and have it back down with both done - provided that you have replacement ones ready to go. As I mentioned, there are a couple of other things you can look at while you are under there, such as cleaning it up and check your pads. Might pay to get under and really check out all the steering that you can get hold of as well. All said, it isn't all that expensive (not like a blown diff or something). Good luck.

I've heard the noise that his car makes, it's pretty weird and i don't think it's the CVs... it sounds like there is a possum under his front right wheel guard that screams for the first 5 metres from when he turns right and presses the accelarator from take off.
Never know, could acutally be the CV or it could be just the boot rubbing against something and making that noise. Go to the guy that I went to, and that McTaff went to if it is the CV... he does specialises in only CV repairs, top bloke. |

Thanks guys
I will have to put it on hold while I am in New Zealand. I appreciate all your help! Turbz, I think the possum is under the "left" wheel well. He should starve while I am away, but I have my doubts.... Hope to see New Zealand SVX members at the Beatles Experience gigs!! I wont post a link but guide you to our myspace page... Type in "beatlesexperience" after typing the myspace dot com forward slash thang.... Thanks Ringo *

SVX transmissions suck!
Well, I am back from NZ. Didn't see a single SVX and I travelled the entire north island!! (In a piece of ****e 2008 Ford XR6-it fell to pieces during our trip!!)
Saw loads of nice Legacy's and WRX though!! Also played 2 gigs in Canberra - and saw zero SVX..... So, back to my tranny.... 1st and 3rd work perfect. Reverse takes a good while to engage - about 1 and a half seconds. I have decided NOT to install a 6 speed manual. WAAAY to much hassle for me (with new pedals, ECU programming etc) and I am happy with an auto...One that works that is! So, what should one expect to pay for a nice recondition job?? I want it to be improved upon during the recondition as well!! (i.e. installing an external filter!!) Will the parts I order for my 1992 4EAT be the "improved" 4EAT parts or would that require a full replacement as opposed to a "recondition"???? I don't want to have to go through this for at least another 200,000kms. What is my best course of action people???! Recondition or Replace? Price IS an issue!!! Cheers, Mike
