I've gone in and just quoted part numbers straight out... but that trick doesn't work for me, they all remember me especially after I pull up in the rarest Subaru.

Re: Strange Engine Startup
So I changed my Coolant Temperature Sensor to a new one, and unfortunately the car still struggles to start when warm... Does anyone have any suggestions???
When I start the car in the morning, it's not a problem. When I start the car after just turning it off, it's also not a problem BUT if I start the car after not driving it for 2 hours, it struggles to start!!! (once started it's fine) I've checked diagnostics and no codes show. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Jordan. |

Re: Strange Engine Startup
Since I've changed the Coolant Temperature Sensor... I have 2 strange things that have happened.
1) I think it has slowly actually worked!!!!! I'm not sure if the ECU learns or what the story is but the car seems to be starting alright after a few hours but I've only done this twice.... Is this possible??? 2) Since changing the CTS.. when i start the car in the morning I get White Smoke for the first probably 2 seconds once the car has started.. Does somebody know if this is to do with the CTS (likely) and if it's a problem??? Billyboy.. my suggestion is change it anyway because it's cheap as it is and takes literally 5 minutes if you have a 19mm deep connector for a ratchet set, and if it doesn't work out, well you have a new sensor anyway... First check codes to see it's not something else... if not leave the battery disconnected for a while after putting on the CTS and make sure the car is cool when replacing.. Jordan. |

Re: Strange Engine Startup
Hi AUSVX,
So you think it might be work hey? There have been just a few times that the car has been hot when it started fine. But only a few. I have check for codes and found none. Whatever, It still has a problem with out a code. As far for the smoke. Alone with the smoke it should be very fumey to. My car does the same. I've been thinking about taking to the Subaru dealer to have them figure it out. But, I'm still going to hold off for a few more weeks. How many days have you had the sensor change and how many time has it been hard to start after the change when the motor is warm. Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure I'll be changing the sensor. Thanks |

Re: Strange Engine Startup
My car has only smoked once (most recently) since changing the sensor and that's from startup, morning cold.
I've had the new CTS in less than a month... the first 3 times it struggled when I tried starting after not driving it for about 3 hours... and the latest 3 times starting the car seems to be fine... I rarely drive the car so I'm not the best example, but I was really disappointed when I changed the sensor and the car was still struggling to start. Subaru actually gave me the wrong sensor originally and I had no idea what the CTS looked like.. they gave me the smaller sensor JUST above the CTS which is the sensor that connects up to the heat gauge next to the speedo... So I replaced that and also the CTS which is just below that. |

I changed the CTS... it was less frequent but still was coming on. I determined that this check engine light wasn't going to beat me, so I made a decision to take drastic action and remove the bulb! That probably brought back your attention span. (Just kidding of course.) I think the computer may have to get used to the proper functioning CTS, because last night I drove for a combined 25 miles on the freeway and residential driving without the light coming on. (a modern day record) I sure hope I am right about the computer learning that it has a good CTS to live with! That check engine light gets to wear on a person. Take care, Keith Information about pricing* I have a friend that works in a Subaru dealer parts department. He is the parts manager. (good friend to have!) He says that for a 95 legacy and 92 SVX the part is the same price and the same Subaru parts # as well. About $20 * tax for the part. Last edited by kwren; 07-31-2008 at 11:10 AM. Re: Strange Engine Startup
Thanks for the info, I'll be hitting the Subaru dealer in the AM. I know what you mean about a light being on. My Air bag light is on. I've thought about taking out the bulb a few times. But, I don't want to forget to get it fix as soon as it make it to the top of the repair list. Thanks for the part number. They will help a lot. AUSVX..
