Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

I have good amount of cash to repair it now, but if it is going to be 2-3 thousand (or more), then I am not sure if it is worth doing at this time.

Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

It might be wise to have the shop pull off the inner door panels and see if there is rust forming at the attachment points for the exterior lower door clading so you can prevent the spread of any issues there. Mike621 can probably tell you the details.

Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

Anything can be fixed. I had my driver's side fixed about two years ago by cutting out the rust and welding in new steel. Now the passenger side is showing a little rust. Might be time to do the same on that side. Question is should you do it now before it gets any worse or just wait until the spring. Don't know the answer to that.

Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

If you're not going to do it now, at least get it oil sprayed really well. I just oil sprayed my car last night and actually pulled the plastic cladding off the doors to coat everything underneath, and pulled the interior panel to get the inside of the door thoroughly.

I swear there must be brand new cars sitting in dealerships up there with rust holes in them.

My 1959 Rambler had been sitting in a junkyard since 1972 when I got it last year, the only bad rust is because of foam rubber crap like the floor mat collecting water.

Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

Sean,
I'm assuming you took it down to Jeff's A.B. They do rust from the inside out so fixing the rust on the outside is nothing more than a temporary fix. Might want to consider what Mike said about having a donor scrap welded in there. 5 batteries for your grinder and a trip to Harry's should get you what you need from that Purple Cash for Clunkers car which was quite solid rust wise. I'd suspect you'd get the part for $20 or so. Then when you get her all fixed up you'll want to fill those inner parts with some nice gear oil then go for a spirited drive followed by a trip to the mall or grocery store (so the excess can drip elsewhere).

I hate to admit it, but I don't think I could do that with out help from somebody knowledgable. I know it sounds easy, but I really wouldn't know how, and would be kind of afraid of messing it up (not to mention I don't own a angle grinder). However I will stop by and ask Jeff for a quote on fixing it this way. If it sounds reasonable I may give it a shot.

Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

I can see if I can get my dewalt working again. I think the switch went. I have 3 batteries which should be close to enough. I don't have much free time in the next month but should in Nov. If you do stop in there ask him if he's got much experience with painting a fiberglass body. I'm looking to have my TVR done this winter.

OT, you get good driver's side (fender, door, quarter panel)?

.
.
.

I think ur rust will take a long time to become a hole but it just doesn't look good especially with a bright color car.
