Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I think my baby has bitten the dust. The radiator split while on a divided highway and I couldn't pull over due to guard rails for a few minutes.

Had the car towed to the specialist garage I use, but they can't test the engine for damage until we can find a replacement radiator.

Is AMR still in business? Their website doesn't function.

Found a PWR rad for $1000+ plus shipping & install. Pretty steep if I also blew the gaskets. Oh. What to do?

Yikes! That price stings. That's more than the purchase price of my '97.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Long ramble ahead:

I've been forced into starting to truly bring my SVX back to life, way earlier than I expected (or wanted to). From looking at this forum I can tell that this car used to be pristine and had a great owner and it has been treated horribly the past half decade. I bought the car for $800 back in March 2020 with my stimulus after my Volvo [s]""snapped a crankshaft""[/s] got it running, and managed to daily it for half a year despite it having no business being on the road. It has been sitting ever since. The good news is the house I have been renovating for a year has a garage that no longer has a collapsed roof and is usable for the first time in decades.
My beloved Volvo is getting murdered from deferred maintenance; footwell flooding (dreaded sunroof drain) has slowly fried computer modules in the car and I missed Christmas a few states away due to the TCM frying the same day that water got into my front passenger door panel, froze, and caused the window to jump the track and shatter. A hack mechanic butchered the undercarriage with a forklift last year causing all sorts of exhaust issues
The even more goodly gooder news is that I have access to parts from a 93' Touring Edition out of nowhere. I grabbed interior door panels, the ABS pump, headlights, a ton of trim and anything I could put my hands on with the hour of time I had. I figure I'll make a thread to keep track of things soon

Awesome news, yes please make a thread! And I'm pretty sure you'll find some Volvo enthusiasts lurking around here. Just not me.

Yes, and the thread should be under the " Not Exactly SVX " section.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Seeing as my Volvos passenger window shattered inside of the door when it fell off the track, and the car is still leaking water through the sunroof and the CEL is now on, I'm definitely focused on the SVX for now LOL.

I will make an SVX thread for saving this car today though.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Currently inspecting my power steering pump as we speak. I just learned about how the O ring between the reservoir and pump is often the culprit, and I'm contemplating replacing it, cleaning everything up and seeing what happens as I need wheels to get to work tomorrow. I took the o ring off, didn't get a good inspection of it because it immediately fell into the engine abyss.

Tons of jank already, the tensioner pully nut was hand tight, and I'm not even sure the o ring was placed in the correct spot.

I bought a rebuild kit for it after my power steering went out (in the junkyard parking lot of all places) in May, but I've been putting it off as this car is leaking fluid from everywhere imaginable. Just look at this mess

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Had a temporary radiator hooked up the the SVX so the engine could be tested.

Good news. The engine is fine. Now I just have to find a reasonably price rad and hoses.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I bought it! After a couple of Foresters and a couple of Crosstreks, I traded in for a 2022 WRX (attached photo!) Naturally, my '92 Pearly will always be the "car I should have never sold" car, but this one is pretty satisfying.

Hello to all my old friends; I miss the culture and the car.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Once again the yearly spring ritual. Started up the SVX after sitting for 4 1/2 months in the tempo garage. Like always it started like it was run yesterday.
297,500 km. and it runs beautifully. Only issue is a small hole in the right side exhaust manifold. I replaced the left one about 2 years ago.
Spring is a beautiful thing.
Tomorrow I get the Moto Guzzi out for it's first ride of the year.

Talking Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

It Lives!! Picked up my SVX yesterday. Finally got the PWR radiator installed. Also had the brakes serviced, replaced the alternator with a salvaged one as it was getting weak and replaced the battery. It was so nice to take it for a spin.

The rad is pretty impressive. It sits about a cm lower at the bottom than the OEM but the fans fit perfectly as do all the mounting points and hoses. It is quite a bit thicker and wider than the OEM which required removing the bumper and lights to install it. It will be a challenge to change the bulbs in the fog lights I think. Also access to the belts and pulleys is much more constricted.

Next up is getting the winter wheels off and giving it a good detailing.

Also got my Honda Valkyrie out of storage last week and took it for the first ride of the season. Feels like spring is here.
