Were you welding for rust repair or collision repair? I'd like to improve my welding skills.

This car was used in a snowy area. The previous owner gave up on the car inspection due to rust, so I got it for almost free. I replaced all the side sills at that time, but after 4 years, the rear area has also started to rust. I usually don't buy rusty cars, but my wife liked it so much that I had no choice. Luckily all the panels were still available so for the most part it only needed plug and spot welding. Plug welding is relatively easy. Butt welding on thin panels is very difficult. I found some serious rust around the rear cross member lateral link attachment parts, which have a big effect on the rear geometry, so I couldn't just leave it there. Most of the welding is done, just need to add 2 reinforcement panels, seal thoroughly and repaint. |

Looking good, Noriyasu!
I recently sourced a new PCV and hoses, new PS rack bushings and differential bushings (thanks SVXNation website) for the 1992. I will install these items in the coming weeks.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
The rear end had the panel seams sealed with automotive sealant and then painted with a rich rubber paint.
This paint is elastic and will not get scratched even if it hits a stone. It also has a sound-deadening effect. I used this paint when I had do restoration an old Mini. Minis are cars that rust easily, but there is no rust anywhere on the car to date. Next, I pulled out many spare parts that I had removed from another low mileage car and stored away, and I needed to make sure I had everything before I started assembling the car. Lateral links, drive shafts, rear differentials, center differentials, hubs, brakes, etc. It makes more sense to use these stock parts rather than reusing parts that are rusted or have crushed rubber. The wall of the garage where the SVX is kept is used as a storage area for parts. |

That's all for today's assembly.
New handbrake cable and evaporator hose are needed. |

I installed the seat today.
I'll sleep well tonight because the parts that were taking up space in my bedroom are back in their rightful place. |

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Yesterday, I pend working on my wife's R1 and started replacing the engine on my sister's R2. This has a higher priority.
The R1 and R2 are sister cars, with the R1 being a three-door model and the R2 being a five-door model. The engine of this 100,000 mile R2 consumes a lot of oil and emits white smoke. I'm going to replace it with a used engine with 10,000 miles that I have prepared in advance. This engine is almost new, but I replaced the head cover gasket etc. as a precaution. My brother came here to help do this. We were able to remove the engine. The engine room of this car is very narrow, so it seems that the general method is to place the whole subframe on a table and then lower it down, rather than from above. |

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
While I was away on vacation, I pulled parts from a 87000 mile SVX that was being parted out in Nevada. I pulled a power steering pump, window switches, a seat, and a handful of other pieces of trim. The car had no motor and appeared to have been parked for awhile.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?
Thanks. Now, the bottom of back half of her R1 looks as good as new car.
Next I would like to paint the wheel arches, but first I have to repair my sister's R2. The engine replacement was originally scheduled for next spring. The damage to the R2 engine has gotten pretty bad so I need to hurry up with this job. My sister is renting a car while it's being repaired and there will be costs involved so we need to get it done quickly. Today I cleaned the engine compartment and CVT and separated the engine and CVT. Tomorrow I am planning combine the new engine with the transmission and put it back in the car. |
