Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Might have been a long time since you painted a car but you have not lost your touch .. I am going to attempt painting my bumpers in the summer. If I get brave I will do the hood and roof next.
Next step I hope u got a good color match. Can't wait to see it all in one piece...

I'm hoping that color blends with the door when the masking comes off. Looks great though! : )

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Thanks guys,

I think the door and trunk lid will be fine.... I only covered the repaired area with the base. So it's blended in those directions as it is. The bumper will be the thing to watch. The Q-panel looks fairly uniform, though.

I got two small runs with the clear - need to try to polish them out, if not successful, the I need to do the clear again .

Practice makes perfect.

Also, I need to move the compressor outside if I ever do more of this. The cooling fan moves a ton of air and it is a major source for dust under garage conditions.

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Color matching turned out very nicely. See bumper/fender line....

9 different ingredients, each measured to the tenth of a gram.

I will let the clear cure for a month and then sand it down and buff the whole car.

Almost there .

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Interior panels and rear seat still to be installed.... and the whole car buffed at a later date.

Just hosed off all the dust and dirt.... Though not perfect, I am rather pleased with the end result.

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Nothing wrong with that job. A lot of work but it payed off. What is the spot on the rinsed off picture below and to the rear of the gas door?

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

It really looks amazing especially considering what it looked like when you started.

Thanks again for your kind words. I have to admit, there are a few imperfections which do not show in the photos. But I am very pleased. It is rewarding to do all this.

The spot you mentioned is just a reflection of sky between the tree tops .

The two minor runs are very difficult to show in a photo. Let's see what I can do when I try to fix them.

Rgds,

Tapani

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Here are some pics of my repair in progress. (Next year you all will probably see me at the Reading meet minus 1 arm and 1 leg ).

Like Tapani's car in his recent rust repair thread (which turned out awesome) the inside of the quarter that meets up with outside metal of the quarter was rusted through badly. It will be replaced with a Subaru replacement panel.

Here is the backside, the smaller more deteriorated piece of metal is the inner section

Outside of piece

Here is the cut away. The rusted section was not as extensive a Tapani's. The front of the wheel well opening below the cladding was clean. We are not going to be replacing the entire quarter panel after all, we will most likely just be using a section of it.

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Here is picture of the cut out on the drivers side, it's a much smaller piece to be welded in. I'm probably going to stop back intomorrow morning so I hope to get a few more pictures.
