Both can be rectified. If you look at the filter, you'll see it sits in a 'well' which appears to be sufficient to contain the oil as the filter is removed. If there is a tube running up inside the filter the oil will not drain out when the engine is off.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of the idea. I've never removed one, so I don't really know what happens or what's under there. And it looks weird.

Well, there has been a lot of talk on the Ferrari boards about this... owners use them because they were OEM original... and now I think the owners really only used for when their cars on on display. The Ferrari guys seem to have been on top of the Fram thing for a while.

tube or not they drain back. they are designed not to but they still do. the well is supposed to catch the oil but doesn't do a good job. taking one of these off always ends up in getting some oil drips even if you are very careful. if you have ever had an oil filter that dripped or leaked a little then imagine that mess under your engine on top of it, and the belts as well. this must have been toyota's contribution.

i only say that because toyota was big on that in the 90's and 00's.
