Popping Noise From the Dash Board or Windshield
Popping Noise From the Dash Board or Windshield
Author: Subaru NUMBER 12-57-92 DATE 10-22-92 APPLICABILITY SVX SUBJECT: DASHBOARD "POPPING" NOISE Should you receive a complaint of a "popping" noise from the area of the dashboard or windshield on a 1992 SVX, the condition may be caused by the different rates at which dissimilar materials of the dashboard expand at given temperatures. The condition may occur on a cool day when the materials in the dashboard are warming or on a warm day when the materials in the dashboard are cooling.
CAUTION SHOULD BE USED WHEN LOWERING STEERING COLUMN NOT TO DAMAGE THE FLASHER RELAY.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO TWIST THE FELT MATERIAL WITH THE TAPPING SCREW. SEE FIGURE 1. As a final measure before reassembly ensure that the claws of both speaker grills do not contact the resin frame. New grommets; Part Numbers 66033PA000 (quantity 1), and 66033PA010 (quantity 4), should be used to counteract the creaking noise associated with torsional forces applied to the dashboard under normal driving conditions. Also found to be helpful is the application of the same felt material to the bases and locating dowels of the "A" pillar trim panels. NOTE: A PRODUCTION CHANGE HAS BEEN MADE AFFECTING SOME 1992 SVX'S. IF THE VEHICLE YOU ARE WORKING ON DOES NOT HAVE LOCATING DOWELS ON THE "A" PILLAR TRIM PANEL BASES, THE NEXT STEP MAY BE DELETED. Before reinstallation of the "A" pillar trim panels, use a pair of scissors to cut the same felt material that was used earlier into half circles. Apply the half circles to the bases of the "A" pillar trim panels where it will contact both the instrument panel and where the dowels will fit into their respective slits. Four additional circles of felt material will be needed for this procedure on each side. When the trim panels are reinstalled there should be no sign of the felt material that was just applied nor any gaps between the trim panels and the dashboard assembly when completed. PARTS INFORMATION FLAT RATE INFORMATION This operation can be claimed under the Subaru Limited Warranty using the information in the chart. . Last edited by How-To Doc; 04-20-2010 at 08:00 PM. |
