SVX metal is too soft!
I just got done replacing my power steering return hose, which sucked to say the least. While I was working, I was leaning over the engine bay with my knees up against the front side panel. Upon finishing the hose replacement, I noticed that my hard knees had put a few dingees in the metal. I find this quite surprising. It's no wonder these cars are so prone to dings given the softness of their metal. Anyone else agree?

This has not happened to me.
But I think I can explain: my husband has a vehicle even rarer than the SVX, the Ford Ranger GT. It was produced only in '88 and '89. Our mechanic was working on Chris' Ranger a few years ago and creased the fender with the keys, etc in his pocket. He tried to make it as good as possible. A few years after that, Chris got rear-ended and we decided to pay a few extra dollars above the insurance claim to have all the body work and repaint done. The crease in the fender is now just a memory. Yet every time we go to our mechanic, Chris brings up the crease. It's a running joke. I would hate to have the same situation with Penny. Which is exactly why our mechanic is very very careful with our vehicles. ~~Michelle

I replaced my return hose a week and a half ago. I was pretty conscious about leaning against it and made an effort to press my weight evenly against the fender. Hearing your tale makes me glad I did. Sorry to hear about your fender
Replacing that hose is a real pain. It refused to let go of the lower connection and I had to cut away the hose to release it. Putting on the new one was a real chore. Pushing it on felt like a millimeter gained per push. I can't imagine trying to get any leverage on it if I tried doing it from below. Can't even see how anyone is able to do it from underneath.

A little carb cleaner in the hose helps it slide on.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that on future hose replacements.
