interior light dimmer
I've been searching through the realms of data on this forum, and keep getting sidetracked by too much interesting stuff, so I thought I'd just post what I'm looking for in case someone knows the answer off the top of their head:
I accidentally shorted the footwell light, and blew a transistor in the dimmer delay circuit. I'm an electrical engineer and can fix it easily - but only if I can find a box with the dimmer delay circuit in it! It's probably in a manual somewhere, but it is not easy to follow the wires in the looms behind the dash. By the way, I've got an Aussie (RHD) '92 SVX. Bruce |

From the manual [US lhd one] The timer is a smallish cubic box, it times the dimmer, rear defogger, rear wiper delay, lots of things. Should be about 2 or 3 inches big. It is located behind the soft panel in front of the passenger. It ought to be directly above the glovebox lock. Big flat box will be cruise control unit if fitted. Box you want will be below to left or right of it. Block connectors to it are B90 and B91, supposedly black and poles listed as 16 and 20. Hope this helps, Joe

Thanks for that, I know the one you're talking about. My a/c evaporator and tx valve were taken out a couple of weeks ago, and I could see up in there. Both the metal cruise control box and the black plastic boxes were there.
The bolt holding the cruise control to a cross member was half out (not loose so it may never have been tightened. I fixed that last night. The annoying thing is the car is in having the new tx valve and evaporator put in right now, so I'll have to work out how to take the soft dash cover off to get at the dimmer box. thanks again. Bruce is in Perth Down Under. Not quite certain but WA probably means Western Australia. Joe

Why not ring up your A/C guy and tell him to leave the area "open " for you to access the timer? When you collect the car, he can walk you through the re-assembly process. Should be pretty simple. Joe

Answer 1: Yes I'm in Perth Western Australia. I often wonder what confusion it causes when I have to fill this in in mandatory fields in a form....
Answer 2: On the a/c - well the evaporator and tx valve are back in, which is the good part, but the a/c high side pressure is going through the roof. There are no blocks in the system, and if you load just enough gas to get things started it still gets high pressure. The next thing we suspect is the rebuilt compressor (1 month and A$1000 old) is faulty, so that will have to go back under warranty. This is a pain right now, as the last week has been well over 100 degrees F. They also have the fan wiring screwed up by the look of it, as low and medium speed on the fan are both running at medium speed. But that should be easy to fix. Before I crawl in upside down and look, how does the soft panel come off the dash? Bruce |

Not sure on this Bruce, try the following: Take down the glovebox for access, you will probably have to take off the lid. That panel seems to be held onto the frame using 5 upper, 5 lower self tappers, all screwed upwards towards the screen. See exploded drawing: http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...ategory=660-A2 You will also need to remove the airvent. It seems to be pop-out type, but check from behind before you damage it. [A new panel is only $327 ] You are on your own from here mate. Joe

You mean the panel above the glovebox lid? Why do you want to remove it? The timer module and blower motor are both removable without removing that piece. I have replaced the alarm module and removed the blower motor on my 92 without messing with it. Just remove the glovebox lid and the inside of the glovebox and you have complete access to the modules. I don't remember if the glovebox has to come out for the blower motor.

As for the A/C it is possible you have aie in the system. Mine did when I had it filled. My dad pushed on the valve on the high-pressure side and only air was coming out. At the time the compresser couldn't even turn due to the pressure.
As more air was being let out the compresser started turning and has been good ever since.

Sorry to come in late on this thread. Here's the location of the timer module, according to the manual:

Just to clarify, I am talking about the door light dimmer. There is a small black box above the right footwell that I discounted last time I thought about fixing this, and then there is the larger black one beside the cruise control box on the other side.
We'll see this weekend - if its not too hot outside. Bruce |
