Slipping gear when the engine gets warm
Hi everyone,
I have 92 SVX and has 128K mile on it. And I have a problem with my transmission. When the engine is cold sifting works fine. But, after engine gets warm, I have problem with first and reverse gear. It starts slipping a lot, especially reverse gear. Is it just about a time to rebuild transmission? Or something else? Dose anyone know good mechanic in San Francisco area? Thank you for your help. |

Subaroku, do any other gears slip when it warms up, or does the car just become undriveable at that point? This sounds very much like what happened to my car a couple years ago. A fluid passage was obstructed by debris and causing a drop in pressure once the car warmed up. I could drive it normally for about five minutes before it would stop holding any gear at all. I took it to a dealer and they did a flush and replaced the internal filter. The tranny worked normally until one week later, when it started slipping o nthe 2-3 upshift. I was able to drive it occasionaly and lightly over the next few months before I had to replace the tranny entirely. I recommend you have someboy look at it right away. If there's any hope of saving the tranny, then you have to make sure you make it slip as little as possible. That means none, or as close to none as you can get. The slipping is just causing more and more damage every time it happens. Of course, if your problem is similar to the one I had, the debris causing the obstruction had to come from somewhere - namely the clutches. I think it's likely you're in for a rebuild very shortly
