abs brakes

true, the tone wheel checks for rotation of the wheels. if the computer senses that one or more wheels are not turning during breaking it means that a wheel has locked up and you are in a skid. it then pulses the brake pressure to keep the wheel turning and allows the driver to maintain control of the vehicle. You can't steer with a wheel that is not turning. If you have ever hit the brakes hard and slid in a straight line while you have racked the wheel over you know what I am talking about.
It might increases breaking distance in a panic stop but at least you can try to avoid hitting whatever is in your way. The svx has a 4 channel system so it can pulse each wheel individually instead of all 4 at once. It is most critical in wet or icy conditions when even the slightest braking can lock a wheel.
This is not to be confused with traction control which pulses the brakes on idividual wheels when a computer senses that a wheel is spinning FASTER in realtion tothe other wheels which means that the wheel has lost traction during acceleration either from a standing start or in a turn. In a standing start the result is fish tailing, in a turn you usually will spin out if it is not corrected.
either way you need that tone wheel and sensor for the system to function properly.
I hope I have cleared things up on how the damn thing works.
