Is that first gear in the D position, or first gear on the shift lever. Does reverse work? Do the dash light change when you move the shift lever?

Harvey.

Unless I let my car idle for about 15 minutes it wont come out of first unless I manually shift it from 1st up to 2nd.... Im thinking I have the same problem.... Oy I guess the solenoid bananza begins here...

If the lights on the dash are controlled by the tranny computer, (that would be my guess), it sounds like the computer isn't telling the tranny to shift?

Do you have access to another computer to swap in?

Good Luck,

I'm sorry, I just reread your post . . . You're saying it DOES go through all of the positions on the dash display but the tranny is staying in 1st gear.

It looks like a Sprag one-way clutch in the box has failed. It holds a part from rotating, so the drive passes through. When it fails, the part rotates, and there is no drive. Except for 1st gear that uses the low reverse clutch instead of this sprag.
Take it to an auto transmission, or ring them, talk to them about it, see what they say.

Harvey.
