Hi,

Does anyone have any idea why a steering wheel goes off if it is never been removed or reinstalled? I didn't understand till now on how a steering wheel went that much off on doing a tranny swap. Any ideas where to check?

From my observations -
1) The # of turns for the steering wheel are same on both sides
2) The # of outer rings on the outer tie rod joint -
Driver's side - 4 rings Passenger's side - 7 rings
These should be ideally like 7 rings on both sides (accroding to svxfiles)
3) There are vibrations in my car while goin above 65mph
4) At the same time my steeering is shaking like a mad wheel (left and right).
5) Missing sub-frame flange bolt (Ordered it from the dealer and have to fix it tommorow).

1. is that from the proper steering wheel position?
2. not if something's bent in the suspension.
3. have you checked tire balance?
4. at least you know it's the front.
5. which one are you referring to?

1. No its from the present off position
2. But I never hit any thing nor it was in any collision
3. Yep I have given it at Sears a week before for tire balance
4. Yep, the only thing that I know to be replaced are the front axles as both the CV boots are cracked and I have ordered new set from rockauto and probably I will install them next week.
5. It is part #19 , the one near to the driver.

The rack is fine. It's where the steering column attaches to the rack. It needs to be disconnected and realigned. You've mentioned this in a previous post.

Yep some of the members suggested me to remove it and reinstall it. But we (me, svxfiles, mark, Needforspeed, Silverspear) think that reinstalling the steering wheel is not the correct solution to it as I or anyone else never removed and reinstalled the steering wheel. Tht's why I want to know how it goes off like tht without removing steering wheel and having tires balanced .

You're not reinstalling the steering wheel. You're disconnecting the steering column from the rack to adjust.

I've never had my steering wheel off but I thought I read that it can only be installed one way. Can anyone confirm this is correct?

Can you gimme a rough idea on how this can be done? If this doesn't include removing of the steering wheel, I will give it a shot.

I just kept putting it on close until I got it centered, locked it down and put the airbag back on... Leave the airbag off until you get it absolutely centered. You are probobly going to need a puller to get it off... Something that hasn't moved in over 14 yrs. is gonna be stuck on pretty good
