battle of the bolt...
i cannot loosen the tensioner pulley bolt for the alternator belt! i'm not sure if that's what you call it, but i know it's what i need to loosen up. it's like frozen in there...does anyone have any idea on how to loosen it? i'd much rather replace the alt myself, and save myself the cost of the dealer...thanks!

Hi,
I suggest a box wrenchthat fit real good to the nut with an open end on the other side. Use the open end to attach another box wrench. This gets you a longer wrench arm. (Ah... Have you tried that ?) If that fails, use a 6 pt socket with a 1/2" drive and a breaker bar. The worst that could happen? The bolt shears off. John |

Belt changing and getting the bolt off
I just did mine not that long ago. My crank tentioner pulley bolt snapped right in two. It was a real pain to get the old one out and then the new one in. I don't recommend it. Besides it took 4 days to get the new bolt. Your bolt shouldn't be a problem to get if I remember correctly. Get a breaker bar or even put a lenth of pipe over your rachet or wrench. If you wanna buy a breaker bar I highly suggest autozone. They have a decent great neck 30" bar for $9.99. It's done everything I've needed it to do w/o a problem.

I want to break free
Break free fluid is good advice. A good class of penetrating oil left to soak on the bolt overnight will usually shift it.
If that does not work, a good folk remedy is use some brake fluid on it. That stuff really soaks in, do not put on tons of it on and no way let any of it touch paintwork or rubber belts. It will loosen your bolt. Use a large half-inch drive socket to loosen it, should have strength enough to loosen without a bar. But use a bar over it if need be. Joe

a little late with this, but...try PB Blaster. its a super-penetrant that will loosen just about anything. its always worked real well for me.

a little late too, but...
I would second the PB Blaster. Made easy work of the exhaust bolts when I dropped my tranny.
Another idea would be to get yourself to someplace with an air or electric rachet vice a breaker bar. They usually put less side torque on a bolt - and in my limited experience that's frequently what causes a snap off - assuming it isn't past penetrating spray help. |
