is there any hope for 3rd gear
in my 92, i bought it knowing 4th was slipping...turns out when i got it on the road, 3rd slips to the point where i cant maintain speed as well..
if i cleared all the lines, added some lucas, do a full fluid change, and added an external line filter. could i nurse a few hundred miles out of the trans? searching didnt give me much help with this question. |

Re: is there any hope for 3rd gear
I might be having the same problem soon Gamesy. How is driving the car with only 2 gears? I will have to drive mine that way until I can find a replacement. It won't see the highway, just back and forth to work thru town. What happens when it comes time to hit third? What is the top speed in second?

Re: is there any hope for 3rd gear
6500RPM in second ~80mph.
I wouldn't want to cruise around at 70mph in 2nd gear. |

Re: is there any hope for 3rd gear
its not too bad, i think my center diff is 50/50 cause i can spin my front wheels and sometimes i get power to the rear,
2gears isnt that bad for city driving, i have however took the car up to 120km/h in 2nd ( 75mph) wouldnt recommend it, revs are up to 5500 i mainly go 80kmh(50mph) tops without having 3rd or 4th and leaving it in D if sometimes the car will try and shift to 3rd but since it doesnt engage it revs like your in 1st and then hops onto 2nd gear. depends how you drive will determine how smooth the drive is, prolly best to manually shift 1st and 2nd to hold it in 2nd i sometimes leave it in D so when my foots off the gas the rpms drop like i'm in neutral to help save gas, oh ya your gasmileage kinda goes to **** lol i'm pretty amazed at how long the tranny's held up to this point with only 2 gears, i've prolly driving about 1500km at least in this condition. cant way to get my 5pd swap done

Re: is there any hope for 3rd gear
If you guys need to drive with only 1st and 2nd after the high clutch goes, its not a problem at all. The high clutch has been gone on my silver for about 6000 miles. It will do up to 90 mph at red line so driving on the highway is possibly but stick to short trips if you absolutely must. Leave the shifter in 2 at all times accept when decellerating, then I pop it into "D" to eliminate the engine braking affect. I usually averaged about 14-15 mpg while driving like this, and surprisingly, cruising at about 55 mph still gets you the best mileage as when i was making more highway runs to my friend's place about 15 miles away on the highway and I was able to get about 17.5 mpg at best. This was with 93 octane with ethanol and surprisingly, i usually got worse without ethanol but that was only 91 octane.
Hope this helps you guys as well as anyone else in the future who have to deal with this. |

Re: is there any hope for 3rd gear
+1 can it easily be swapped with one from a trans with a bad low-clutch?

Re: is there any hope for 3rd gear
It's too bad that about 95% of failures are related to the brake band/ high clutch problem. I am currently searching for prices on just the friction surfaces in the 4EAT since I have a few transmissions sitting around that have bad high clutches. It's not too expensive if you know how to do it yourself but if you were to pay a shop, you are talking a few hundred or more. LAN does sell partial rebuilds for about $1k with a $750 core charge that the shipping costs get taken out of. He replaces the High Clutch discs with stronger and the brake band with stronger friction surfaces as well as upgrading/modifying the valve body.
