Power steering pump for an LSi

Is there anyone out there that sells a rebuilt power steering pump? I'm not sure if mine is going yet, but I'm hearing some noise from that area. I'm about to replace all the tensioners and if that doesn't fix it, I'll have to suspect the pump is going.

I see the part is available for the non LSi's, but since mine is a 1996 LSi, I need a different part, right? Thanks in advance.

The other thing you should check is the o-ring under the tank.

www.rockauto.com has them. they aren't the best choice if you can find one locally in case it has a problem but they have always been good for me.

I recently bought a reman pump from Rock Auto. $140-ish less $20 core. Arrived in just a couple of days. Don't know if it's the same unit as goes in a '96, but it was shown as the only one they had in stock.

(It's got a bit of a hi-rev whine, but I'll live with it.)

Check with Eric "SomethingElse". He rebuilds them and charges $110.00 shipped, after a 40.00 core charge.

Re: Power steering pump for an LSi

Interesting question. I have only noticed subtle changes in the later year cars like, reservoir cap and pulley change design. looking through the Subaru parts list there is a difference of one number in there part numbers but everything looks the same, and the prices are all the same as well. The latest car Ive put a pump on is a 95 and I didn't have any problems with that.

I checked with rockauto.com and they only have a return and rebuild service for 96 MY.

Can you install them yourself? If you want to get one from me, try it, if it does not work just send it back.

If your not doing the install and paying someone I would suggest going the safe route and buying the one for your car from advance/auto zone.

sorry If this is of no help to you but I have yet to run into this.

Would it make sense for me to simply remove my pump and send it to you for a rebuild?

OK, so after researching the exploded parts diagram it looks like the actual front body of the pump is different for LSi's. The back frame is the same for them all, only the front is different. It would seem that all the internals are the same.

Have you ever installed an L or LS pump on an LSi? Thanks.

Re: Power steering pump for an LSi

I thought my PS pump was grinding, but now that I have it off the car, it does not seem to have any issues. The pulley turns freely, and doesn't seem to have any play in the shaft.

Would it be pretty obvious if it needed to be rebuilt, or is it something that would only make itself know when it was spinning at full speed?

Thanks.

Clarke
