Significant Technical Input
My guess would be the ATF was hot, expanded and dribbled out the vent and hit the exhaust. Not uncommon for many cars to do this. I recall reading in the Denver Post a story about car problems in the Eisenhower Tunnel. One of the workers stated that many car fires start there from the long climb up and then the slow to stop speeds sometimes encountered in the tunnel.

BTW, for what it's worth, a mountain isn't a mountain until it's over 8,000 feet. At least that's what they say out west. Then again they only count half the points on a buck, unlike easterners...

I've always wondered what the hell would happen if one were to break down in the Eisenhower tunnel. It's not like there's anywhere to pull off.

There's so many cameras watching everything going on that help is only a minute away. The first reaction is for the lane signals to close off the blocked lane and/or stop traffic if need be.

BTW, for those wondering, the Eisenhower Tunnel is almost the top of the continental divide in Colorado. (if it were at the top it wouldn't be a tunnel, would it?)
