Cost to rebuild tranny?
Since my first transmission is just sitting in a large plastic bin taking up space in my garage, I thought I might tinker with rebuilding it for the day #2 goes bad. How much should I expect to spend to buy the parts to rebuild it? I assume the condition of it will make a difference so here goes: when it was pulled it would not shift out of 1st gear, it would let the engine spin freely to about 2k before it actually engaged, and none of the TSBs were performed AFAIK. Rough estimates are perfectly acceptable and expected.
Even if it isn't worth doing the rebuild, I'll still probably rip it apart and call it a "learning experience". On that same thought, if anyone has an engine they don't want I've been thinking of making a learning experience out of an engine tear down as well, it doesn't have to be an EG33 or even a Subaru engine, just something that will give me an idea of how that big thing under the hood actually does what it does, and won't cost me more than a $100 or so.

if youre thinking of rebuilding it so its reliable, expect to pay for almost all the moving parts (gears, etc.). youll have to establish what parts you need to replace and what can hold out for another 80k miles. its not difficult if you understand how it all goes together. however, automatic transmissions are more complex and ugly then manuals.
im thinking you should just tear it apart and buy a new one. finding the parts in good condition would be extremely difficult and expensive considering they are just parts. expect to pay about half a new tranny.

Ok then, I guess I'm just going to take it apart and see how it works.

before you just tear it apart, why not look at the Level 10 page and check out their prices for just parts. Last time I looked all the gaskets and clutches etc were $525. Note: this does not include their valve body upgrade or TC upgrade, justa rebuild kit. Add in a repair manual and you might be able to produce a working spare.

Subaru will put in a rebuilt for about $3000, provided the core is reusable. add another 1500 if it's not.
