Tranny Install - totally bummed
Hey all my tranny went last Sat. I got a price of $2500.00 to install another one w/ 39k. Is that a good deal? Should I have other items looked at before the tranny is installed??

Hmm that sounds kinda pricey to me. What exactly was wrong with your tranny. There are simpler things that could be done instead of buying another tranny. For instance if its not shifting out of first gear a simple brake band adjustment can be done for about 150 at the dealer. Or if it doesnt shift from 2-3 it could be a solenoid. I'm no tranny expert but im sure many others will reply. Ive never had any tranny problems so i wouldnt be able to tell ya.

is that for the trans too?!?!?!?! i just bought my rebuilt with 18k on it for $275! i put it in myself nand things are going without a hitch. Thats pretty pricy for a used rebuild. shoip around and see what u turn up.

Used 4EAT trannys usually go for $500-$1500, depending on where you live, (used re-built trannys, if factory, re-builds have improvements that lessen the chance of failure). Its an 8 hour job (roughly) for a shop to swap out a tranny. So 8 hours at $75.00 an hour, $1600.00 plus fluids, filter shop materials is about right.
ps; Where I live, our shop rate is $35.00 an hour, and I buy used 4EATs for $450-$950 (not re-built, and not svx mind you, but Impreza/Legacy/Outback transmissions) Tom

Tranny Install - totally bummed
They said the tranny could not be rebuilt because it was totally shot. The new/used tranny was not rebuilt. The price includes the differential I don't know if that is good or bad.
I guess I'm at the mercy of the mechanic now since I okayed the work to be done. My SVX is not drivable and searching & moving it is not really an option. Hopefully it will go well. The SVX in WP, NY is looking real good. I'll let you know. Last edited by rcsvxnCT; 10-11-2004 at 08:04 AM. |

I hope everything turns out ok for ya. I used to cringe when I got the final total from the mechanics with my other car . BTW there is this kid who wants my car so try n lemme know soon because i really dont wanna sell it to this kid. Would much rather sell it to an SVX owner as i know it would be well taken care off . Email me or gimme a call if ya need anything else.

Just before I got of the highway, it skipped. Then at the bottom of the ramp it jolted a few times and when the light changed it would not go. I put it in park. Shut off the car, turned it back on. Purred like a kitten. Put it in gear, began to roll then jolted again. Tow came tried putting it on a flatbed - front tires froze. Basically dragged it on the bed. I thought it was the cv joints & axle. But what do I know. Got it to some guy my bother knew Told I needed a tranny and I would have to locate one!!! He'll install it but if the tranny was bad, I'd have to get another one. Sent me over to Mr. Transmission (franchise) and here I am wondering if I'm being ripped off. _______ VENTING NOW___________ What's really crazy - My pop owns an autobody shop (OVER 35 YRS) and he is basically useless. DEAD BEAT DAD!!!! His one that doesn't give advice until AFTER the fact of what I should have done. Peep this - he doesn't even help me locate a reputable place to take!!! Wow thats crazy. I prolly woulda kicked the car if that happened . Is this the first time the tranny went or has it gone before too? Hope everything works out. Did you get a tranny yet?

1st for me. I'm the 3rd owner. I got it at 60 - 70K 8 yrs ago (all highway so I'm told) Put in new struts/shocks front and rear, spark plugs, wires, etc. Nothing else huge since except 17" rims (forget by who)
I'm crazy about the oil changes though. Supposedly the tranny is in from somewhere in NY w/ 39 k. Should be done by mid week if everything goes well. Anyone close by have a windshield just in case I decide to keep it??? |

Go to the wanted/for sale section and post about the windshield. I am sure someone has one layin around that they could sell to you.

I payed $2,800 to get my tranny rebuilt...1 week and 80 miles after i bought the car!
