Looking for a good Trans shop in Pittsburgh...
Greetings! I am a new proud owner of a 94 SVX and have a few questions that you guys could help me out on. I purchased this car with a grinding noise coming from the trans area. When you accelerate the noise sounds as if a wheel bearing is grinding. When you let off it goes away and is a lot quieter. I have already removed the trans and diff, and am wondering if anybody nows what this sound could be, and if anybody can suggest a good trans shop that is familiar with the svx in the pittsburgh area. I believe that no TSB's have been done to the vechile yet. Also while the diff is out, i was wondering on what i need to get or find to change the gears that i have read about in other posts? I have learned a lot from reading all the posts and from this site and think that it's great! It's nice to know that people still help out one another for just the sake of doing it, rather than trying to mess with somebody just because they can. Thanks guys!!! Hopefully i can get this 100% finshed for the meet.

@x! You!!! j/k Your car has 3.70 to1 ratio gears in third, there are 4.11 to 1, transmissions as an alternative. There are some threads, comparing the pros and cons of both. Tom, and welcome to the club

Okay let me rephrase that question above. Is it a good idea to get a set of gears for my diff. from another car, or is there a newer style trans that is two wheel drive and already has the gears in the diff that i could find? I seen all the awd posts, but none for FWD only.

It is a lot cheaper to replace your complete transmission with a used one than to pay a transmission shop to replace your ring and pinion.
Most shops do not have the tools to properly set up a Subaru ring and pinion. The trans shop could just replace the front (only) differential, but that means taking apart the transmission, probably $50.00 an hour in Pgh. It also meams that they would have to find a used transmission to take the differential from... Since most Subarus and svxi are awd, most of our collective experiance is with awds. If anyone out there knows what Legacys have steeper gears, please speak up. I'll find outwhat I can and report back. Tom(born in Braddock , raised in Swissvale, and Upper St. Clair)

If you hear the noise after making your changes it was either a wheel bearing or the resonator rattle @ 2000 RPM.

Try Harry's Auto Center on Chestnut Street in Butler. 724 285 1784
They're svx specialists, and have done 5 speed swaps, 4.11 swaps, and everything in between. Fantastic people to deal with, too. Mike |
