Power Steering Questions
I had a new p/s pump and re-built rack and pinion put in one year ago. I just realized today that it has the wrong fluid in it. I think it is a clear colored G.M. product. I can now hear some squeaking in the car when I turn the wheel. They're is some slippage when driving and it also has become harder to turn the wheel. I felt some slipping a few months back for a few days and then the problem seemed to go away. Now it is back with the cooler weather a lot worse. I have changed the o-ring before but not recently. I'll do it again. Can someone tell me how to drain the power steering completely so I can put in the correct fluid. I'm hoping these two steps will fix the problem. Any other ideas welcome for consideration. Thanks.
Mike

Do the O-Ring first....
Then try some "Lucas Power Steering additive"

P/s
Thanks Huck for the fast reply. I have no room to put in the Lucas product unless I remove some fluid first. No loss of fluid. I have used it with my old rack and got immediate results. Going to do o-ring today and go from there. Thanks again.

And remember that you use transmission fluid - not PS Fluid.

If you want to get most of the old stuff out, you can disconnect the low pressure return line. Then start the car and turn the wheel back and forth. It's gonna make a mess, but when my hose dry rotted, that "method" did a very effective job of emptying all of the fluid.
If you add ATF as it pumps out all of the other stuff, you should be able to replace most of it...

I guess that you have checked the drive belt, to see if it tight, and the crankshaft pulley, may have separated. These will cause the squealing, and hard steering.
Harvey.

New O-ring installed
I said on my starting thread the p/s had the wrong fluid in it. This was not factual. I will talk to the subaru mechanic monday exactly what he put in. He gave me a partial filled bottle of it but I can't find it. I put in the new o-ring and took it for a short test drive. Half of the old o-ring was actually flattened out. The steering seemed better than before. The same pressure when turning and no slipping. I did however have a knocking noise when turning at slow speed. Also with the engine running in park when I turn the wheel to the right I hear a squeaking noise right at the steering column area. Does something in this area need to be lubed? I have a re-built rack and pinion I have driven with for about a year. Around 9k miles. I'm going to have my mechanic here this noise and drive it asap. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome and thanks for the feedback.
Mike
