I wouldn't do it considering the max load ratnig of the vehicle is some 600-700lbs.

I see Outbacks and Legacys with them all the time however.

I imagine you might need to modify or cut open the rear bumper and custom fit/weld it to the frame.

Generally hitches are tailored for specific vehicles. It might be worth looking into something that has been made for Outbacks.

The Search button is your best friend - next to Earl. Here is one of the threads about a trailer hitch. Good luck.

I already answered this on another thread....??
ANyway, once again, start your searches in australia, the towpacks were available through an australian manufacturer as a 'genuine' accessory!!
I would try 'Hayman-Reece', or 'PTB', (prestige towbars), both based in Aus.-unfortunately.......
Cheers

Yes, but are those Australian hitches made specifically for SVX's or generally for Subaru?

I had seen one someplace I did do a search at first. I had everything figured out except were to hook the draw bar underneath. My max tow wil be 500 or 600 lbs. Max distance will be less than 20 miles. I don't plan to use this on a daily basis. It also gives great rear end protection. <LOL> Yes an Outbacke can tow a trailer. See my locker under my old name ( John Luciano ) We towed a 1,100 lb trike 400 miles at 60 MPH thu the hills of PA on cruise control no problem. Still got 23 MPG. Automatic tran, 4 Cyclinder , 2000 Outback

Manufactured here locally to fit the SVX, they also do a Towpack for just about every car on the road. But we are talking along time ago now. I got one from them a while ago for a GC8wag, but they had to 'dig up the plans' and make me one!!

cheers

I'm fairly certain that the owners manual states not to tow over 3500lbs behind it! 1000 w/o trailer brakes. As stated do a search you'll find even a custom one quite pricey (which is why I bought myself a Brat rather than tow with my SVX).

I think that exceeds the 500 lb limit.

Thanks Well guys I start building my hitch tomorrow. A friend has a lift so it should go easy. I plan to make it out of Cardboard to get the fit right then convert the cardboard to steel. I only plan to use it in an emergency if my motorcycle breaks down I can get it home etc.

Nobody is reading this , but I am telling it anyway..... We got all the pieces cut and fittted tomorrow we weld and bolt it on. Photos will be in my Locker . So now there are 2 SVX's with Trailer hitches. Spent 6 hours bending and trying out pieces , looks better than the job that I got my insperation from. We slightly modified the hook up. I can see why a custom hitch will cost you big bucks I am only $40.00 into mine and $220 into the labor ( if I had to pay myself $22.00 an hour. )

I wouldn't see why towing with the SVX would be a problem. Of course, towing massive amounts of weight would destroy the AWD system..but something like a sailboat or a load of tanbark wouldn't be that bad. I've towed with my Legacy before..and it acts like there's nothing back there.
