3.70's for everyone!

Well, what gets past for 'gospel' isn't always 'gospel'. Someone says something is true, then the story is passed on and on as truth. I bought it!

I was amazed to read and hear spoken that Subaru did not install a 3.70 rear diff in any car produced for America, just a FWD 3.70 SVX. Well, guess what?, Subaru did install 3.70 rear diffs!

My son Jon and I took a trip to the wrecker. I was amazed to learn that 3.70 rear diffs are so common [and usually high mileage] that no time is wasted to pull them. What a surprise it was to read the Subaru diff stickers down 'diff row'. I was reading the silver tags on the diff covers, 3.70, 3.70, 3.70, at least six of them, maybe more.

The 3.70 rear diffs are the same casting as ours, same 5-bolt side covers, etc. Late 80's turbo Royales, among other applications. Now, someone with sources can dig out the rest of the info.

So, if you want the same 3.70 svx gears the JDM, UK and AU SVXes run, it's no problem! Find a FWD SVX 3.70 front diff, and then go pick up a 'common' 3.70 REAR DIFF. Who knows, those 3.70 rear diffs could have been installed on 4eats, that I didn't ask.

So, another myth busted. America has plenty of 3.70 front and rear diffs.

I've known forever that the old school roos had 3.70's, and 3.90's .....pretty much the only ratio's Subaru used through the 80's

Morning Ron
Morning Huck
Morning John

John its much easier to swap out complete trannys and re do the rears than to swap out just the front diff and get it right.
It can be done, but it is more likely to whine and wear.
Just my $0.02.

Huck, why not correct the false statements in so many of the threads? Granted, it's not worth the effort to swap 3.70s for 3.54s, but at least someone with a good fwd diff would have the option. By the way, the 4.11 front diff in Jon's car passed through your hands to Chike, to us, via Tom.

If Subaru already had a boatload of 3.70s and 3.90s in the 80s, why produce a new 3.54 in late 80s for the US SVXes? Must have something to do with EPA, CAFE, etc.?

I've known it too (I think I have one in my basement?), I just don't recall ever seeing a post saying that 3.7's didn't exist???
