should I be pissed?

Im studying for a big anthropology exam this week and one sentence in the book just threw all the credibility of the author out the window.

"Organisms could last longer if they were built better. A Subaru costs less than a lexus, but it is of lower build quality. As a consequence, a lexus is not expected to break down as often as a Subaru is."

I dont know whether i should be insulted by this or just agree haha
I wonder what any of this has to do with anthropology?

sounds like some piece of monkey **** biased sales pitch

but at the same time lexus is rated best for it's value, in the perspective of total problems on a vehicle. i'm not hot about a high end toyota myself. it's just taste. dont worry about it.

well it is true that most toyotas are a little more reliable than subarus.. but there are many worse cars out there, not sure why they would use those two as an analogy opposed to honda and dodge or something. meh, life goes on.

I remember that they used to be known for the engines/drivetrain outlasting the body work as well...

I think the author was making an analogy of the point he or she was trying to makw, but failed at it by our knowledge of the cars. I would not dwell upon the example, but just go on and don't look back.

What is being said is, one could take an expensive car as compared with a lower priced model as being a practical indication of what is being described. However it certainly is a muddled, mindless analogy and better should be expected from such an authority.

E.G. ---- Organisms could last longer if they were better built. By way of illustration, a lexus, Cadilac, Rolls Royce etc, would not be expected to break down as often as a Subaru, Toyota, Ford, etc.

I agree that the text is not good English, but the content hardly warrants outrage on the basis of the rather stupid simile.

P.S. We are often told that this is a family forum. Surely there is no necessity for threads to be headed as is this one, particularly in view of what is complained about. Those in glass houses ----------

Trevor - I thought you would comment that there was no sign of someone drinking more that they should.

Isn't that a description of being drunk?

All words have a meaning, including those which are automatically banned here. Guzzling and getting sozzled is not an indication of good taste,

IMHO standards are dropping. Earthy text properly portrayed in good humour, can be in good taste and can add worthwhile colour. Anything that could be considered by some members as crude/offensive, surely should not constitute the heading for a thread, and must reduce the standing of the network in the eyes of visitors.

What is more the headings for many threads are simply stupid, in that they give no indication of the content. This after all is the basic object of a publishing a heading. Many, many times, members are called upon to plough through posts, in order to ascertain if the topic is in line with assistance which they might possibly provide. This shows a rather selfish, lack of thought and common sense.

Ya GOTTA give the teacher what they want to get the grade!

In the 8th grade, my daughter wrote an 'essay' about how the world would be better if there were NO guns, about 6 months after she recieved her Marlin 22 for Christmas!
I asked her if she really believed what she wrote.... She told me that she wrote what the TEACHER wanted, so she could get a good grade!
Then she asked me " when can we take my Marlin to the planet MRAF and blow up a box of shells??"

not a lot to do with 'organizims' but speaks VOLUMES about 'Teachers,'tenure' and the USELESSNESS of it.!!.

Smoke a LEXUS w your subi and be PROUD!!
