Towing
Has anyone ever put a tow bar on an SVX?
There's nothing in the manual about towing capacity, and the local dealership doesn't have any information. I'm not talking about pulling a 4-horse trailer or anything here, just a little U-Haul, 900 pounds plus a rated max. of 1800 pounds of cargo (though I don't have nearly that much stuff to move, so total weight of about 1 ton). |

Re: Towing
It has been done before by a couple people on this forum. I was looking into putting a hitch on my svx just for towing a couple cycles - 1000lb max. After replacing my transmission in my garage I decided not to.
I thought I read somewhere that the svx is rated to 2000lb. I would make sure to install a tranny cooler for sure, these transmissions generate enough heat as it is... http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?tuzem|17861 Was going to print some of those pics and bring them to a shop that could do it. |

Re: Towing
bad idea, have you ever smelled burnt tranny fluid? It stinks like poop.
but if you do choose this, do not use 4th gear, leave it in 3 no matter what.

Re: Towing
The SVX if I remember right was rated to tow 3500lbs (came from one of Subarus accessory guides). That said I'd never even think of it even if I could've found a tow hitch for it. Wouldn't go over 600lbs-700lbs in the winter.

Re: Towing
Sometimes you just do what you have to do.
But it's only as a last resort, as I wouldn't tow it behind a moving van or fly/train/bus it back and make a second trip unless I had to. |
