craaaaaap

well... to make a long story short. my alternator is shot i think. my inside lights flicker and flash like a christmas tree and i have to jump it to start it (about six times today) and after i drive for awhile, when i get to where i have to go, i turn the car off, and if i immediately try to start it up again nothing happens. complete deadness of power. crap

Sounds like your battery probably is too.

(Maybe I should just keep my big fingers shut.)

the thing is i just bought a new battery like 2 weeks ago. maybe the connections are loose. that would be exciting. but would that explain the flickering of the lights? the positive terminal wire is shot and needs to be replaced i know that for sure.

We may just be getting to the root of our problem here.

you really think it could just be the positive terminal that is causing such a ruckus? i did pop the hood to try and check things out, knowing what the alt. was i checked it, it was doing something dunno if it was doing what it should be, but it was doing something. if it were shot would it do anything? positive terminal would be cheaper.

Pete,

You can drive the car<?> I had an 86 xt6 and the alt went out on me when i was doing a long distace drive. Anyway after the alt quit i started running on the batt (not to my knowledge), once the batt didn't have enough juce the car wouldn't accel and all that i could do was coast to the side of the highway. I was able to jump/charg the batt for about 20 min and i was able to drive the car to the closest off ramp (less than 10min, 5 miles or so) and park it until the tow came. So if you can still drive the car with out fully charging the batt it sounds like the alt is still working. Try juming the car then removing the neg batt terminal, if the car still runns then it is not the alt. As mentioned before it could just be the terminals, dirty etc., just causing the batt not to charge. Since the batt is new it could have held a good charge this whole time and you may not have been charging the new batt the entire time you have had it.

Good Luck. Hope all is well.

hey alright! another dude named adam! now we can do the "adam 1 and adam ii" thing! we can be all cool like the randy's!

anyway, I had the alternator blow out on my '89 RX, and the car simply wouldn't run for more than two minutes on a jump. I'm no expert, but I'd just guess that your battery terminal is in need of a little TLC..

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

It is a no no, to remove a battery terminal while the motor is running. The alternator voltage can spike high enough to damage the electronics.

Harvey.

You say that the positive wire is shot? Maybe that's the loose connection!

I've had a loose plug on my alternator light up my dash lights before. I wiggled the plug a bit and the lights went away.
