need help w/belts URGENT!

hey guys..

i'm at a friend's house and thought it would be a good time to install the new AC belt seeing as how it was clear and not-too-cold. well i finally managed to get the thing tightened down to the point where it didn't squeal like crazy as soon as i started the car. only problem is that the belt now SMOKES. At first it was just pouring the stuff off like it was nobody's business.. after i let it run awhile, it seemed to die down. what gives? is the belt just breaking in or something? is this a sign of a more serious problem? need help quick..

thanks guys

Hmm... Smoking is worse than squealing... is the AC compressor nearly locked up? What about the idler? Spin them all... The belt is too tight or not tight enough?

well, i guess i have no way to really tell if the belt is too tight or not tight enough. everything seemed to spin freely. obviously the big honkin' pulley connected to the crankshaft won't spin too easily because it's, like, you know, connected to the crankshaft. i guess i'll run it looser and see what happens. thanks for the reply boone..

anyone else have insight? i really appreciate it

Adam, You should be able to deflect the belt with your finger .24 to .28 in. at the longest span. (betw crank and AC) The AC and idler pully should spin freely. (off the belt) The PS and Alt belt has a deflection of .16 to .20 and also has an idler pully. GL B.

Wow your having more belt problems than any one I know. The AC pully will spin freely as long as the AC is not engaged, but if the car is running and the DEF ar AC is on it will engage the AC compressor and if it's locking up it could cause the problem, so you might want to check that. Good luck and fix thoes damn belts.

Adam have you checked that the crankshaft pulley, is not spinning on the rubber between the pulley and the hub?.

Harvey.
