Where did your radiator crack?

I just ordered a new radiator this weekend after discovering mine had a long horizontal hairline crack in it, about dead center at the base of the hump or ridge that runs laterally across the top of the radiator. This seems like an odd place for a crack to develop...just curious to know if others have experienced the same thing. It took me while to find it because it is damn near invisible (until I tried giving the outlet hose a good squeeze and saw all of the coolant seeping out) Bummer. I was hoping it was just a hose...

Hey Rufus, don't toss the old radiator. I think it was Matt (Immortal Suby) who applied a massive amount of black "goop" to a long crack in his. OK... let the long crack jokes begin, but it seemed to "repair" the leak. Check with him to find out what this miracle stuff is.

Ron (crack seepage is really the pits).

I'm not really interested in trying that approach myself. I am kind of happy to have an excuse to install a later model radiator in the car anyway. I will hold on to the old one though, just in case I try to get the Green Machine operational...

Going on about 8 months now since I repaired the wife's svx radiator crack with some goop. It will probably spill its guts tomorrow since I wrote this, but so far so good.

So Matt, what is this magic stuff? Is it "Goop" brand goop or is it some other goop? Gotta' plan for the future, ya know.

Thanks, Ron.

magnum steel
it is a 2 stage putty in a tube about the size of a stack of quarters. Black and grey box. I keep one in the trunk of each svx along with some sandpaper - you need it to rough up the surface before applying the goop.

Mike,

This is exactly where mine cracked, a hairline crack about 8" long. It only seemed to be on the surface as I never saw any fluid seeping from it under pressure. Two days later I replaced it with a new one as a preventive measure.

John-

Knowing you, you probably replaced it because the stickers on the top were frayed around the edges...

Actually, the sticker on my radiator cap came off and the foam strip on the front of the radiator had a small coffee stain on it, so when I found out that a new radiator came with a new cap and new foam...

Sweet. New foam My foam has been slowly disappearing for a while. I know, I could have just gone to the hardware store, but I really wanted some genuine Subaru foam

me too

One of my radiators cracked in the same manner.

Also, I was able to repair a puncture in the plastic of the other radiator's bottom hose connection with some clear 5-minute epoxy. I sanded and cleaned the surface really well before I applied the epoxy and it's still holding. Sure beats almost $300 for a new radiator huh?
