New tire recommendations?

Try doing a search for "tires" and far too many topics come up. Thought it would be faster to just start a new thread to get the latest opinions on what the best tires for the SVX are. Thanks!

What size wheel?

Check out my YOKO AVS ES 100s on Saturday. Killer grip and quiet.

These will be going on 17 x 7.5 rims. I'm thinking 235/45 will be a safe bet. I've seen 245/45 on a car here with no problems, but that may be pushing it, especially with lowering. How are the ES 100's in the rain?

Well, I ran my 14.26 in a downpour and didn't slip any of them in the least. In fact, I have never chirped them. I don't do much hard cornering wet or dry, however I did take a sweeping 30 mph turn at 70mph yesterday. No problem there. I am running 18's.

At well over 70,000 miles (and not used up yet - by a long shot!), the extremely quiet Bridgestone RE910's are still my tire of choice. The price is right, too.

The Volvo has less than 30,000 on it's Michelen's and are nearly shot. It'll get the RE910's next.

I've been a big fan of Dunlop's D60A2. I guess it was replaced by something last year, but I think the tread was very similar. In every condition from dry pavement to monsoon rain to deep snow, I have been really happy with these tires.

I have the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP on my car, in fact that is all I have EVER put on the SVX....

Here is what people who have commented on them @ www.tirerack.com have had to say about them...

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

The chart is at the bottom of the page. And from personal experience, these fair pretty well in the snow for summer tires.

This chart is also very usefull... keep in mind these reviews are from people who actually BOUGHT AND USED these tires, not someone paid to review them...

...which also means that they're not necessarily qualified to review a tire. Typically, reviews of this type are written by people with little experience with competing produts and therefore have little or nothing to compare them to. Even if they do compare two brands or models of tires, those comparisons most likely do not stem from tests in controlled circumstances.

Anyway, my point is that customer reviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

If you look at the specs for many 225/45-17 tires, the recommended rim width is 7.5 inches. For 235/45-17, the recommended widith is 8.0 inches. I think I'd stick with 225/45-17s or find some 8.0 or 8.5 inch wide rims.

I have the dunlop SP5000s. Great all-season tire.

For summers the Firestones are great. I'm getting Yokohama AVS Sports for this summer.
